Yes, the English VA is amateur shit while the JP has fucking Shinichiro Miki and Megumi Hayashibara as main characters.

Additionally, the English script is terrible. Meowth's cat speech is left untranslated, all of the jokes involving Sounansu (Wobbufet)'s name are untranslated (his English name should have been "Straightup" or something like that), there's a lot of censorship (e.g. the reference to Kasumi's breasts), etc.

Yes. The dubfags haven't actually watched it in Japanese, they're just low-functioning autists who feel threatened by having to read and their nostalgia being threatened by the existence of the real version (similar to the Sonic autists lashing out against the Adventure era for not being Archieshit). As someone who actually watched about 20 episodes of Pokemon in Japanese a couple of years ago, I can give an informed answer.

The Japanese dub is a completely different show. Not in the sense that it's better but in the sense that the characters' characterizations are significantly different. Even so, if we're comparing...

Brock is overall way way more bland in Japanese. It's only Eric Stuart in the English dub that goes out of his way to make Brock the charismatic dudebro that he is in English. No idea who voices Brock in Japanese.

As for Ash...Veronica Taylor's Ash feels more naive and childish, like a real kid unraveling the wonders of the world. Rika Matsumoto's Ash is more like a teenager mentally, Rika's Ash is more determined, has a more serious vibe to him. Both are good but in the context of the show Rika's Ash voice is more fitting I guess, but still props to Mrs Taylor.

Misty...is surprisingly good in both versions, equally feminine and emotional in her pitch. Rachel Lillis's Misty performance is the extremely RARE unique case of an English female VA properly grasping the Japanese concept of moe kawaii. Never before nor after have I ever heard an English female VA nailing the kawaii girl voice unironically like Lillis did. Like, seriously, she's the only one in the history of English dubbing who managed to pull it off.

Opening: I wanna be is kinda more catchy than the "naka naka naka" JP opening.

Ending: the Japanese ending is cooler though, the "hyakugojuu" song.

Team Rocket: I don't think there's a big difference between them in English or Japanese although the Japanese meowth sounds a bit more annoying but that's kinda the point of Meowth's "character".

Overall the Japanese dub is more adventure inspring for anime fans while the English dub is like a comfy sitcom for you and your friends. They're still the same show though.

I like the dub, partially due to nostalgia and partially due to how good Team Rocket's dub voices are. I can't imagine them as having any other voice. I also strongly prefer the dub opening song and the nice pokemon songs (as cheesy as they are).
The censorship and lost translation stuff stinks, so thats a downgrade. Ideally, I'd prefer the dub if we got all the censored stuff and jokes/context didn't get. A more accurate translation would have been preferable maybe. I like it.

We actually have an illustration of plans for the anime that ended up getting changed, and according to it, Bulbasaur was supposed to have evolved all the way into Venusaur by the league, while Pidgeotto hadn't evolved yet. Between this and the way things come full circle when the fully evolved form of the Pokemon Ash failed to catch in the first episode fights off the fully evolved form of the Pokemon attacking him in the first episode, it can be safely concluded that the anime was meant to end with Pidgeot vs Fearow (and this may well also have been why they decided to save his reunion with Pidgeot for the very final episode decades later, as there are some deliberate parallels to the start in the last few episodes where Ash shows how he has grown when it comes to interacting with the wild Pokemon from the first few episodes).

In other words, the movie was most likely always meant to be set around the 8th gym, as it is in the final anime.

That NEVER sounded real to me, I can understand not getting or being able to use the insert songs, because of the music companies and songs, more often then note many M&E tracks of the old shows remove the vocals or even the whole song, but those still kept the actual show soundtrack and sound design, and wouldn't make more sense that the music soundtrack is included with the rights of the original shows, as in with the original package?
