The opposite would be being too dependent on them, and that’s exactly what happened. Every loop played out the same: angels, Rei, Asuka, Kaworu, restart. In the end, Shinji learned to appreciate them but also realized he had to move on to experience new, healthier things.

In the original and EoE, Shinji doesn't feel like he learnt anything and just reverts back to self-hating, porcupine self. In Rebuild he confronted Gendo, made him realized just how much of a coward he is and his refusal to let go of Yui. Ngl, I bawled my eyes out when Gendo hugged kid Shinji at the end and him finally "reuniting" with Yui unlike in EoE where she outrights rejected him. However, despite that, I hate what they did to Asuka and Misato.
