Finished the manga yesterday, and I want to say: you guys were right. This is amazing.
I was in it for the beautiful world, cozy atmosphere and some healing. But those last two volumes were a rollercoaster of emotions that hit me in ways I didn't expect.
Few manga have left me similarly wistful, and completely floored. But this one was a first for me because it actually made me tear up during certain chapters I was unprepared for.
Now I still have the anime left, which some say is even better. No doubt in large parts because of the soundtrack. Gonna take it at a slow pace with 1 episode a night.
I know there are some diehard Aria fans here on /a/. Is Aria truly special to you? Please tell me about it.
Shoutouts to the anon that kept shilling this in the NYE r/a/dio threads, by the way (there was at least one of you, you know who you are).
Pic related is a random Undine that caught my eye in Ch5. That wasn't supposed to be Atora, though, was it?
Based OP. Favorite undine?

>>281175648>two eastern windows of the Palazzo Ducale are the same height as the other fourThat's a pretty major fuckup. They should be lower because they were part of the original palace that wasn't expanded until 1340, with the later four windows being higher in order to better illuminate the room where the Great Council would meet, with its elaborately-painted ceiling. Also the earlier windows still retain their elaborate traceries because they survived a fire in 1577 that destroyed the other windows.
The quatrefoils above the colonnade of the loggia are also omitted for some reason.

hey anons
does anyone know how popular is aria with the japs? asking because I think its not that obscure but at the same time I barely see it mentioned when anons talk about what the japs supposedly like
the reason of why I dont think its that obscure is because ive seen ads about tours to venezia but with aria related themes and by themes I mainly mean that the tour covers a lot of the places that were show in the anime/manga, I dont think an obscure or unpopular show could pull that kind of events, specially if we take into consideration that we are talking about travelling to other country, also I saw two vtubers from a popular vtuber agency mention aria and from what I remember those two arent know for streaming a lot of anime or manga content, so that made me believe that aria is somewhat popular
>>281185052Yearly concert

>>281184390I really need more Hagkari
>>281185574After she gets over her initial awkwardness, she drains Akatsuki dry every night.
As I was saying, this chapter right here actually made me shed tears. Maybe it's because of the time I read it, and the general mood I was in (and put myself in), or maybe Aria is just that magical. But no other manga achieved this before.
Same for the last Cait Sith chapter, but this one hit harder. It surprised me because this wasn't even the ending. But before I knew it, this turned into a nail-biter.
I had wondered earlier why Alice remained a Pair for so long and chalked it up to her being a middle-schooler. When it dawned on me that she might be promoted straight to Prima here, I was begging for it to happen.
There was no guarantee, but it just had to end this way. "Come on, Athena, pull off the other glove, too", and she did. Perfect.
Thanks for reading my blog. What was your favourite moment/chapter?
>>281186184It's been a long, long while since I read or watched Aria but that's one of my favorites too. I don't quite remember if it was in the manga as a complete chapter but mine has got to be the last few minutes of Arietta OVA when Ashita Yuugure Made starts playing. There's a lot of moments with Akari and Alicia but this one sticks out the most.

>>281187000Maybe he was referring to Avennire
>>281174634 (OP)I was just thinking that realistically every Undine would look like Athena considering the time they spend in the sun, but the author could explain it with Mars having different UV rules
>>281187038Maybe the intensity isn't all that high given the distance to the sun.
But if it still were an issue, let's handwave it with "the Salamanders put something into the atmosphere to block UV rays"
>>281187006Damn, I thought there was another one in the works. I know Akari and Alicia is pretty fleshed out compared to Orange and Himeya, but I'd kill for one more movie if just to see more of JC's work. I think they did a good job translating Kozue Amano's art into anime.
>>281186452The manga definitely had more fanservice
Sometimes this series' vibe reminds me of Ah My Goddess
>>281186184It's one of the most legendary moments in the manga, and maybe manga as a whole. When I think of Aria, I think about that scene first, and other things later.

>>281176244Any particular reason why they would necessarily want to replicate asymmetry in Neo-Veneiza despite the historical accuracy?
If their first priority was to be as accurate as possible and as perfectly faithful to the original as they could be, then yeah that's a mistake.
But if it's not, then I could see them intentionally doing this.
She would have had the example to draw from, so it's hard to imagine it wasn't intentional at least from an artistic perspective.
Plot wise, I don't know or don't remember if the goal was supposed to be a perfect 1:1 recreation or not(it's obviously supposed to be very close either way). So I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't know if they intentionally made tradeoffs or not or it was actually a mistake.
I can see the allure of going as close to possible to 1:1 though.
>>281274892You are American.
>>281274974I don't consider myself American, and I have Italian relatives(not by blood) and grew up spending holidays and other time around them in a majority Italian place...so I think i understand what you're getting at. But it's sort of beside what my post was intended to be.
I'm curious about the author's intention and any specific plot points that I may have missed or am not aware of that would make it explicitly a mistake in world.
Who I am is really inconsequential. I can understand why it would want to be 1:1. I just don't know(and am not claiming to know) if that is actually how Neo-Venezia is meant to be.
>>281276195>I don't consider myself AmericanBut you are American, look at how you talk about this sort of thing. "I have Italian relatives and I went on holiday in 'a majority italian place' (not Italy, apparently?)".

>>281277687I'm not American in any real legal or cultural sense at all. There are slight complexities that would make a one word answer of 'no' a question without context not fully truthful or accurate depending on how you define 'American'. But you're barking up the wrong tree.
I spent every holiday and catholic religious event of my youth(rather than a singular holiday) within an Italian cultural enclave with family and extended family who are all Italian or of Italian heritage. Meaning I believe I can understand as much as someone who isn't Italian how much they value and protect their culture, down to some of the most minute details.
Which is what I meant by 'I think I get'.
I don't understand why you assume my attitudes or anything about me personally at all when everything I wrote was specifically out of curiosity to the story and the author's intentions.
No where did I ever offer my own opinion or interpretation. I was just curious and asking questions because it's an interesting topic, and I thought I went out of my way to make that clear in my original writing.
I literally explicitly say things like:
>I don't know or don't remember >I'm not saying you're wrongand
>I can see the allure of going as close to possible to 1:1 though Because I'm familiar with the culture that's supposed to be represented in the manga to a degree more than most would be, but I do not know how the mangaka approaches that part of her story, thus the questions. People here definitely know more about the manga than I do, thus I ask because I love the story and am curious to know more.
Why not say 'She is Japanese' rather than make an incorrect assumption about me, in a post that was never meant to be about myself or even a value judgement on my part at all?
>>281278430Two anons going on a pilgrimage to Venice together?
Sounds a bit too good to be true, doesn't it.
Friendly reminder to Anons to stick with the DVD releases for this. The BDs are some of the most overfiltered "lookin' good" upscales I've ever seen. The DVDs look great however!
Aria became my favorite anime and manga when I first watched and then read back in 2009. I swear this manga is the only one I've read more than twice. I read it at a least 5 times and there's always something fun I missed. Specially now that there is an official TL.
Other manga that REALLY made me fell as it was winding down were YKK (you know why) and surpisingly Bamboo Blade. I never hear anyone talking about it but I picked it up because Alice VA also voices Tamaki, the anime was fine and everything but then I don't know why I think the manga is something special. Most people just seem to think it's alright. I should re-read it sometime to confirm it.
>>281281508YKK was also incredible. A shame that we only got four OVA episodes out of it, but the OP of the first series is stuck in my head.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yPs3hUQ6Ok&list=PLkeylMrUfBH6cHC2rbMM2ifo3PDX5QyYm&index=17
As for Bamboo Blade, there's apparently a "B" and "C", too. I guess you mean just the first one? Might check it out.
>>281281909>As for Bamboo Blade, there's apparently a "B" and "C", too. I guess you mean just the first one? Might check it out.Indeed, only the original manga is fully translated. There is an anime that deviates and has an anime original ending and it's fine.
I will say now though that most people seem to rate YKK and Aria as masterpieces, while Bamboo Blade is usually rated about a 7. But again it's what I felt personally back when I read it, it left an impression on me the same way those two did, even if it's not necessarily the same thing.
Another manga I REALLY liked was Karin. This one used to be quite popular back in the day with gaiafags (it was known as Chibi Vampire), and the ending most would consider it sappy but still it's one of those that stuck with me all these years.
>>281282109I love Karin both the manga and anime. I don't hate the ending but it really seems like most people here did back then and even still do when it comes up in rare threads.
>>281279398Where do you live? Where were you born? What's your mother tongue?
>>281282109I see. I'll keep that in mind and curb my expectations somewhat, then. But who knows, maybe I'll end up liking it a lot, too.
>>281283022>Where do you live? Why does it matter? (not America)
>Where were you born?Not America.
>What's your mother tongue?English.
I'm not claiming to be Italian or anything remotely close to that.
I honestly don't understand what you're trying to get at. Maybe there was some sort of misunderstanding at some point.
Do you think I don't respect Italian culture and how seriously Italian people care about preserving and passing down it in an extremely exact manner?
I'd like to think that even if I hadn't happened to have such experiences growing up, that I would still have some understanding of that because it's pretty common knowledge.
I only think the topic is interesting to discuss in the context of the fictional scifi futuristic world of Neo-Venezia.
It's interesting to think of fictional designers, builders, and residents of Neo-Venezia in the distant future and how much weight people who valued the tradition of the old, potentially having conflict with those who don't have the same cultural or emotional attachment as they do.
The second line in my post is flat out stating:
>If their first priority was to be as accurate as possible and as perfectly faithful to the original as they could be, then yeah that's a mistake.Everything in my post is relating to the fictional world in the abstract, because the idea of the utopia in the story where they obviously go to great lengths to try to recreate or preserve the past is interesting and alluring to me.
>>281278608Nta, but do you happen to remember the name of the cosplayer?
Also, nice collection. Any personal favourites?
>>281284058Because if you had simply said where you live, then anon would have stopped accusing you from being american you idiot.
>>281284058>how much weight people who valued the tradition of the old, potentially having conflict with those who don't have the same cultural or emotional attachment as they do.I was under the impression that neo-Venezia was supposed to be pretty much 1-to-1 in most respects. Anyway, if you know anything about architectural history you'll know that a huge amount of what we see, like, and appreciate is due to caprice, accident, ignorance, cost-savings, or a defunct sense of practicality and if you start trying to "fix" things (perhaps to suit an ideal which is itself the product of historical forces) then there's no end to the mess and you might as well knock down the whole damn thing to construct a proper symmetrical Renaissance palace which is what they debated doing in 1577 after yet another major fire.
>>281284516I don't think that's what would have happened.
I think it would have gone a different way, and dug a deeper miscommunication away from my original post.

To the anon who raised the window question:
I was interested to know myself if it was an oversight or an intentional choice. I looked through some of the literature and came up empty as far as a clearly worded answer.
The Aria Official Navigation Guide has this page:
https://files.catbox.moe/i1xpax.JPG
showing the palace, but no word on the windows specifically.
Monthly Undine vol2 has this page:
https://files.catbox.moe/nqd9jr.jpg
with palace illustrated showing windows at the same level.
I also looked through some of the BD booklets and the Natural BD booklet shows the palace with the windows all lined up as well.
There's mention of the square in picrel here (top left):
https://files.catbox.moe/w9z6eg.jpg
but not the windows.
I can't recall it being mentioned in the anime or manga either but I would probably forget it.
I can't imagine it being an oversight. I'd like to think that the builders in Neo-Venezia decided to build it that way for some reason.
>>281284327The cosplayer: https://x.com/kerokei_cos

Thank you very much, Anon. I like it all! It makes me happy that Aria still has such a dedicated fanbase after all this time.
>>281284870Yes. Which is why it's a pretty interesting subject(imo) to consider how they would approach it, having sort of a 'clean slate' so to speak to rebuild it and the cultural friction of to what extent '1:1' would actually entail.
It's like when Akari was forced to replace her gondola.
I was curious if there was ever any specific references in the works that I might have missed or forgotten about relating to the subject.

>>281285225Actually, if you look at the Monthly Undine vol2 pic that you supplied:
https://files.catbox.moe/nqd9jr.jpg
You'll notice that the windows on the left side are lower, because the entire image is flipped. The Palazzo delle Prigioni which you see on the left-hand side of the Monthly Undine picture is actually located to the east of the Palazzo Ducale, not the west. Clearly they accidentally drew it off a flipped reference photo, while still keeping 2 lower windows.

>>281289822>are there no residential districts to speak of?There are, such as Cannaregio, but the population of Venice is about 50,000 compared to 170,000 in the 16th century so it was built for a much higher level of urbanisation than it actually needs at the moment (the last time the population was only 50k was in the 11th century when St. Mark's was rebuilt for the last time but not yet covered in marble).

You know they say that all women are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Alicia Florence and you can see that statement is not true. See, normally if you go one on one with another Undine, you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But I'm a genetic freak and I'm not normal! So you got a 25%, at best, at beat me. Then you add Athena Glory to the mix, your chances of winning drastic go down. See the 3 way at Carnivale, you got a 33 1/3 chance of winning, but I, I got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning, because Athena KNOWS she can't beat me and she's not even gonna try!
So Alicia, you take your 33 1/3 chance, minus my 25% chance and you got an 8 1/3 chance of winning at Carnevale. But then you take my 75% chance of winning, if we was to go one on one, and then add 66 2/3 per cents, I got 141 2/3 chance of winning at Carnevale. See Alicia, the numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you at Carnevale.
But I'm gonna break it down for all you ladies. Would you rather be with me? Or would you rather be with Alicia?

>>281319646I like weather and severe weather-related things and controlling and tuning Aqua and Neo Venezia's climate sounds interesting as fuck so probably Salamander?
The full kanji name (็ซ็ไน็ชไบบ) also looks and sounds very kakko-ii, as does the uniform and the very japanese looks it has.
I can't remember where it was mentioned nor if it was in ARIA or Colori either, but they sometimes even get to play weather pranks on people too.
I wish there was more detailed information and lore on Neo Venezia's jobs and how Aqua got terraformed and how it all works under the hood, but I guess it's understandable since ARIA puts the main focus on Undines, and it sounds kind of complicated for something that is only secondary to the main iyashi-kei focus of it. It can't be helped. Maybe Colori will expand on that.
