I dropped the manga originally during the vampire bullshit but I did occasionally check back in to see what going on, and I did see there an invasion of giant aliens. I never read the conclusion because I knew it would AWFUL. In this scenario humanity is just proper fucked, the end roll credits. It should end with humans being reduced to urban wildlife getting scraps of food tossed to them by aliens like how people feed pigeons at the park. Or a small number of refugees following other aliens through portals to some other alien world to eke out an existence there while being hunted by their version of Gantz, etc. But obviously the manga simple canโ€™t end that way, humanity has to win. The problem is, with this scenario, only the most absurd asspull or dues ex could make that happen, and that would completely destroy the fantasy of the narrative. I wonder if I should just drop it now and substitute whatever awful crap ending it has with my vastly better headcanon.

Was too late to reply to this post. I agree with you. Tae goes through waaaaaay too much bullshit this volume and she's not even done yet. Either Kurono should have found her and the story should have moved on to something else, or Oku should have written a more believable way for him to find her. And this stuff takes too much space in this arc. You can easily see by the end of the manga that he was burnt out. I'd rather have gotten more K2 adventures or at least made K1 rely more on his skills than dumb luck to find Tae. For instance, instead of having the rich fucks be killed by a hack, K1 pays them a nice visit where he out-gantzes the fuck out of them. Then he beams back Tae and revives the old man, lara croft, inaba, and kishimoto. Idk but there surely were better ways of handling this.

I'm the anon you replied to and I would like to expand on that. I think we all understand why the stuff last volume was there and why it was necessary to a certain extent. Oku took a character the audience is familiar with, and that we know is important to the protagonist, to use as the POV to plunge us into the bleakness and horror of a situation where human civilization and authorities have collapsed under the invasion of a superior alien power, and what happens to normal and powerless common folk in the process, and that's all framed by the personal quest of the MC to reunite with his lover. It's basically the second act of "War of the Worlds" if you've ever read that book except the missing wife has taken the narrator's place. The problem I've noticed in this second read (because yes, I also read this as it was coming out as a teenager) aside from length and repetitiveness is the fact that it's basically in the service of nothing. Neither Tae or Kurono really learn anything or grow from this experience, which is fine for Kurono since at this point he has pretty completed his character arc, but a huge missed opportunity for the former. And it also contributed to the feeling of this last arc's final arc as both too slow paced and rushed at the same time by taking up panel time that could be used to expand on other parts of story. We also can't really expect Oku to suddenly feel the need to speed up the pace of events i the name of story progression when the entire rest of the manga has always been like this, but I think what's missing here from the formula that worked so well in other arcs is the lack of meaningful character development and moments we saw in every other arc, and not having enough cool (and discernible) action scenes to punctuate the human elements, so we were only left with the horror genre element.

War of the Worlds was a much more intelligent story, even though the Martians loss was also ridiculous. The Martians were never once at war with humanity. It wasnโ€™t an invasion, it was forestry workers fumigating the place and setting up infrastructure for the next stage. The risk of death at the hands of humans was an occupational hazard. The Martians had intellects as far above us and ours are above animals.

Conceptually it's a good take. But what breaks it really is the amount of plot-armor that Tae gets plus the lacking character development as you've highlighted. For the former, you can only have the main character survive so much before it becomes really ridiculous. I mean she reunites with Kurono when he's on top of a mech because a random ayy brought her to him. Then she literally gets shot by Nishi and survives, then she literally survives atmospheric reentry. I think this volume had the right amount of survival horror. It's what's next that's problematic. For the latter, there's plenty of possible character development with K2 that we don't get. suddenly he's got a death wish and an inferiority complex. When he stays behind, Kato barely tries to talk him out of it. Then Reika dies and suddenly he understands he was wrong. So the whole character also feels pointless since he dies not much later It also doesn't help that the enemies don't have any iconic designs.

I will admit that I haven't read it, so I can't say for certain that you're wrong, but my first instinct is to tell you that I think that sounds made up, and ask for proof that you're not making shit up or wildly extrapolating from something that isn't explicitly what you're saying.

>If it worked for the greeks
First of all, you're probably thinking of the physical devices used to put actors playing the roles of gods on stage. Second, they actually believed in gods who could maybe fix problems if they felt like it, so if they really did think it was good writing, it's probably because of that. Third, it still wasn't universally thought of as "good enough" back then, because apparently Aristotle didn't think it was good writing.

No Martian came out and said "weโ€™re clear-cutting and fumigating you", itโ€™s based on the opening narration where itโ€™s stated plainly that their minds are as vastly superior to ours as ours are to animals. We do not go to war on chimpanzees. The tripods have two systems โ€” the heat ray to destroy buildings etc, and black smoke to kill humans. The black smoke lingers on the ground for a long period of time which the tripods clean out with steam jets โ€” basically its ecologically friendly pesticide. The tripods themselves are not particularity armored and can taken out with howitzer shots. They are civilian work vehicles, like a tractor that does clear-cutting (heat ray) and pesticide spraying (black smoke and steam jets).

No, they were clearly using military forces. Another example of good vs bad writing is that War of the Worlds explains why the aliens are being psychopaths. Martians evolved into super-brains with tentacles attached which resulted in hyper intelligence but because there is no body they ended up losing human-like emotions. They operate in a world of pure logic and self-serving reasoning. They understand very well that humans are intelligent lifeforms and are similar to themselves, just less evolved, they just donโ€™t care. They donโ€™t feel empathy, they want our planet, they can take it, so they take it

why does it need an explanation, only humans like to pretend they are so different when so many cultures would have done the same or worse, aliens species don't need "deep" meaning to butcher other intelligent species, being evolved doesn't mean they will care more about others.

That call for /storytime/ or /manga/ is getting more real, lockdowns did a number on how frequent storytimes were, this is like my 3rd gantz one. Man it used to be hox etc that would basically liveTL/scan and that would be a storytime, someone would pick something that's finished and either dropped or completely unTL'd.

First series that came to mind is: Soil. Either this is a cult classic by now or i was left out of the loop and thats why i only learned of it recently. It is pure fucking mystery kino. David Lynch just spawned and decided to make a manga, its nuts. The only problem storytiming it is that it starts somewhat slow.

I'd really like to see /a/'s reaction to ''Freesia!'' storytime. Or ''The World is Mine!'' storytime. Those just might become insant classics in some eyes. JUoshi Kouhei could be good too, but its a bit ''way out there'', no matter its quality.

Soil! One of my favorite manga. Always disappointed that it's not more well known.
To be fair it's very different from most people's idea of manga

Great taste, anon! More than disappointed, im simply surprised its not more well known. It has all the marks of a instant classic. Bet one of these days it'll become a classic for /a/nons, just gotta wait a decade or so. Sad.

It's just too clean for me? I can sorta tolerate the different character designs but i just can't feel the weird, the mystery it's feels to clean for me i don't know why.

We had a set of Jiro Matsumoto storytimes just a few months ago that went pretty well. Personally, I'd like to see narutaru again

the ending is trash anyway, the manga peaked on the osaka arc, its all downhill from there

It didn't. On reread i noticed how lame osaka is for the most part. It's just osaka jobbing over and over again.
But people will just keep spamming the "ending bad!" until the end of time.
