At least Goku didn't really treat Vegeta as a friend for most of Z. He acknowledged that letting him go in the Saiyan arc was a selfish act and he just wanted a rematch with him. And during their fight in the Buu arc he only tried to remind Vegeta about his family.

I used to think buu saga was kind of weak but I like it more than the war arc these days. Toriyamas gag manga roots really shining through with a lot of fun but still serious/horror stuff. Weakest part of the arc is probably the kid super saiyans but they still have their moments
