Episode 11 was perfect with Nozomi’s send-off. I’d rather the show just end there because the conclusion sucks. They’d been building up this fleeting feeling of youth (not wanting to let go of the alternate world) in a coming-of-age story (see the “DON’T SAY GOODBYE” part in the ED), but the author thought it was a smart idea to drag things past the climax in episode 11 just to add some muh message.

Realism is when you get cucked, and Nozomi ends up with the guy who simped for her in another world. By the time Nozomi and Nagara reunite in the future shes already used goods, it’s all pointless. Better to have left her dead. Isn’t that the whole point of realism? About moving on? So why bother jumping through multiple worlds just to find the universe where Nozomi’s alive? The fucking narrative is working against the theme.

Everyone gets the whole second compass thing, retard. But it’s dumb that a coming-of-age story completely shits itself and goes, “Actually, you don’t need to move on. We have another alternate option for that,” and it’s a used goods Nozomi.

What’s the point of Episode 11 then? You could argue it doesn’t matter since it’s a different Nozomi, but in the grand scheme of things/how the story’s perceived as a whole, “another Nozomi” is just a final cop-out from what was already a perfect ending.

It's a baseball league here in the world of Monkey Mountain,
played by the great monkeys, which started when the first ball and bat
and the rules of the game were handed down to them.
In the Monkey League, a number of great players arose
from among the nameless monkeys,
whose faces and appearances all looked the same.
They included the legendary home run king,
who batted an unprecedented, record-breaking
80 home runs in one year, Steroid Monkey;
the one who bested the god of batting, Monkey River's career batting average
by two thousandths, the miracle hitting machine, Upper Monkey;
the greatest catcher of the Bigfoot era, Mister Monkey;
later, as manager, he would go on to break the record for most league wins,
with a legendary ten-season-long streak!
Then came the golden age of the M-League.
A miracle monkey came along
and shattered those previous legends one by one--
the monster, Monkey Blue!
This maverick of the league was the only one with blue hair,
who, despite weathering ugly discrimination and crafty persecution,
triumphed over them with overwhelming talent, ultimately becoming a hero,
and a symbol of hope for the monkeys!
Although a rookie, Blue put the brakes to the king, Steroid Monkey!
Breaking his bat as well as his heart, Blue drove him to retirement.
Then, with his mighty pitching arm,
Blue led the underdog team Monkey and Club to victory,
preventing Bigfoot's championship streak from reaching 11.
The public accepted this new hair color,
and there was no doubt in anybody's mind
that the era of Monkey Blue had begun! But then...
...that great tragedy, when a near-perfect game was foiled,
and a monkey was killed, took place!

Did nobody else interpret that girl watching him kick the trash cans at his job as a girl being into him?

Idk when it came to the whole “get the girl” thing I always saw it as him growing into the kind of man girls would want but having to move beyond his unrealistic fantasies for a “new” Nozomi.

Either way people who keep yelling “cuck” forget the prior Asakaze was deeply insecure and stuck missing the “old” Nozomi and his friends whereas at least Nagara is moving forward and growing as a person.

You’re assuming that if someone understands a show thoroughly, they’ll automatically like it, which is retarded. I understand every part of Nolan’s Tenet, but that doesn’t make me like it more.

The fact that you missed the point says it all. I’m talking about Sonny fans “gatekeeping” and guarding something they think is valuable, but who are you to decide that the show has any value? Because of the writing? Episode 11’s Rajdhani dialogue on existentialism is textbook stuff straight out of Sartre. Acting like the philosophical side and the themes of the show carry any real weight is just silly. I’d even say Wall-E is more profound than this show.

>SANity is defined as a 'ur example' by a worthless hack who did shrooms like Kopoopma and regurgitated back everything his corrupt society and peers told him to, with no real input of himSELF
So if instead of doing a shitty series about getting a job or opening up to others, with pretentious and hollow symbolism that doesn't mean anything, the 'rooms and 'society' told him to traffic with human beings, participate in the procuring of women and substances, (as socialist politicians do in Europe and the United States, also fitting in a particular role that they're told to), he would be sane and a valid 'individual'... I don't get why some people hate the ending. I thought it was a masterpiece from beginning to end. I usually say this semi-provocatively, but I genuinely believe it was a strictly better Evangelion in many respects. There aren't many anime that soar to the same lofty peaks as Sonny Boy, nor that many that even aspire to. Yeah, the ending was a punch to the gut, I get it, but that is the point of Sonny Boy. You cannot remain in Hateno forever, and if you do, you will die a miserable child. I have some criticisms of the series, but I don't think this is the right place for me to air those opinion. But despite these criticisms of mine, I sincerely believe Sonny Boy was a masterpiece that can't be appreciate by that many people.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Sonny Boy. The symbolism is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of postmodern philosophy, most of the plot will sail over a typical viewer’s head.

The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these episodes, to realize they’re existential dissections of reality itself. As a consequence, people who dislike Sonny Boy truly are philistines. Of course they wouldn’t appreciate the absurdist brilliance of the monkey baseball episode.

I think if you get the once in a lifetime opportunity to create an original series in a world where anime originals become rarer and rarer rehashing the meditation on escapism that many before you in the industry have done inordinately better is just fucking embarrassing. It's all just a rehashing of what happened with modernism at the start of the 20th century. Also, boring protagonists in escapist fiction can be carried by colourful characters, scenarios, world, fun in general. If you're genuinely trying to be serious, transposing that boring protagonist does not work. If you think this is good, you are definitionally a midwit or even if you're smart you need to go and pick 10 significant novels written between 1900 and 1950 that interest you and read them. An alternative education would be reading about and listening to Schoenberg and the reaction that followed, if music interests you more than books. World as it is > world as it ought to be > retarded jap showing you the world as he thinks it ought to be and pretending it's the world as it is.

I don't think literature peaked at any time, I'm saying this is a subject that is explored with inordinately higher levels of nuance during that period. Sonny Boy is kitsch. It is the definition of kitsch, but it wears the trappings of modernism like a skinsuit. It's a deceiver.

QRD is that modernism was fundamentally a reaction to idealism. As in, works that show things for how they are versus works that show things as they ought to be. The famous names are things like The Trial, Ulysses, In Search of Lost Time. If you want something Japanese then Snow Country is an incredible novel. The protagonist is a scholar with a refined knowledge of ballet yet has never seen one.
I like both strains, personally, I think they each have value, but it causes me physical pain when a creator thinks they're creating one but are actually creating the other. It's a question of values being imposed on a work without the creator's intent, and what you end up with is something that styles itself as portraying harsh truths but is actually just a jap who wishes the people who engage with his chosen medium weren't so unruly and difficult.

I figured out why my gut instinct said this and it's because Eva is so unbelievably personal. Sonny Boy feels like a psychiatric evaluation of a patient, which condescending at best, and Eva is the physician healing himself, a weird, interesting guy showing you his inner world. My eyerolls per second watching the rebuilds were significantly lower than Sonny Boy. I'm happy Anno found a woman who can put up with him, good for him I suppose. Much less annoying than paint by numbers surrealism paired with finger-wagging.

Reality is Sonny Boy is overthought upon by its audience for obvious reason of being an absolute UFO in the modern anime landscape, original anime are rare, experimental shows are even rarer, we might get 3 a year at most.

To be fair, Anno's ego is, for me, a huge quality in his directorial style and worked for him a lot. I'm not a fan of his shin japan heroes so far but shin godzilla is genuinely the best godzilla movie ever. You cannot claim a guy that has spent the last 30 years of his life seething about otaku culture despite being the embodiment of otaku culture himself and still to this day only create art around otaku properties (there is nothing more otaku than fucking kamen rider and ultraman) isn't a gigantic hypocrit thinking highly of himself.

In the case of Sonny Boy, it's opaque on purpose.
Some anons can understand this distinction and enjoy it for what it is, some can't.

No, it's a simple logical truth. Ego is defined by the dynamism of affinity: what you like and don't like. Media consumption ultimately results in truncated dynamism: at most, you are responding to a state that will never change. In most cases, you just become a receiver of another's ideas. Ego death. Interaction with another living thing is inherently dynamic; your opinions and reflexes develop by the constant back-and-forth. Individuality is developed and maintained by varying the nature of or partner in those interactions. If you become a cog, it's because you let yourself be sublimated to a lack of dynamism in interaction.

I think people mistake the greatness of Sonny Boy's poignancy for a declaration of its thematic depth. It can be the former without being the latter. It’s more about being genuine. I watch deep art-house stuff myself, like Ryuusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car and his 5 hour film about housewives and divorcees just living life. The difference is I don’t treat it like some untouchable masterpiece. Judging by how some people wear this show like a medal and how defensive they’ve been in this thread feels like they’re not being honest with themselves. Even NGE fans are upfront enough to admit their favorite show’s flaws.

I hung out in both the Reddit and /a/ discussion threads when the last episode aired, and the amount of pseuds was astounding. Some even admitted they didn’t understand a damn thing they just watched and still rated it 10/10 just because. Their whole “objective” rating system runs entirely on vibes, like you could show them 10 secs of Oppenheimer and they’d slap a 10/10 on it without even finishing it.
