I feel like pre swap the writer wanted to develop him in that direction and then as the artist got thrown to the wolves, told to write the story himself and instantly made the whole series popular, those undertones vanished quietly and he was a fairly normal protag (with the focus on the batshit insane antagonist that hard carried the Manga)
