I often wonder if romanticised depictions of teen love in media are a big cause of the incel epidemic. It’s easy to feel like you’ve missed out when every piece of media is telling you that you need to experience something, while also not telling you the reality that teen love tends to be messy and invite a ridiculous amount of drama.

Teen love isn’t a “common” phenomenon, but it does exist. It very rarely leads to a long term relationship though because the relationships tend to be shallow and built on horniness above all else. Also, about 80% of people are single by the end of HS. College is where most people start dating seriously, and even then, college relationships are overly romanticised too.

I love a good romance story, but a lot of high school romcoms gave people a really unhealthy idea of what romance should look like. The consequences of which have been disastrous for the human race.

When I was in college, there was a girl I liked who I talked to frequently. She sat behind me in one of our classes, and one day I put my hands behind my head, and she started playing with my fingers while giggling. After that, I invited her to my brother's wedding party, and she even bought a new dress for it. We danced and had a great time, and when it was time to see her off... I just walked her to her car, said goodbye, and went back. Not long after that, she explicitly friendzoned me, and we hardly spoke again. She got married with some guy in Hawai'i like two years later.
