I love this Walking Bird > Flying Bird > Migrating Bird arc. Ishiguro initially misleads the reader about who the bird is but the arc being Kon's journey is cute. The Walking Bird is Kon finding some happiness from getting a friend. Flying Bird is Kon growing up a little by learning to be independent from Hotori. And Migrating Bird is Kon moving away to make a new life without Hotori's help. Kon's "Because of you I really enjoyed high school" really shows how much influence Hotori had on her since they only met a few months before she graduated, yet Kon managed to go from a loner for 2 years to singing on stage and having classmates she could go to karaoke with. I love the little callbacks like Kon saying she can't speak English and Hotori asking if she's a bother. It's one of my favorite arcs of the manga.

Hotori and Kon's friendship is definitely one of the strongest and most emotive arcs of the entire manga. They're both a little odd and characterised so well that you really root for them finding joy in a friendship.

I always liked this chapter because it really feels like one where Ishiguro had a lot of fun ideas he needed to get out. The goofy prehistoric Soremachi society, the trick mystery of a past life being an early memory of a period drama, the little twists like oh it's actually the FUTURE not the past in the dream.

I feel the dream is quite well conveyed as Hotori's imagination, and it's fun to compare it to the Jelly Island Mystery from earlier in the manga. Everyone in the JIM had really blunt characterisations and actions. That's still somewhat true of this dream, like Mimina here >>281347117, but you can see things have advanced. There's a twist, there's the most complex characterisation of cavegirl Kon, there's odd little detailed that have little bearing like Shizuka nee-san seemingly being physically incapable and needing helpt to move >>281347095 >>281347151. You can see Hotori is starting to demand more complexity from even her internal narratives.

You can actually link this pretty directly to stuff we've seen in the manga if you like, like cavewoman Shizua having visions in a sauna and not being able to run away after the Hotori/Kon/Shizuka mystery where they went to the hot springs and Shizuka got tired running.

Episode 12 "Dreams of the Future"

"The Uninvited Assistant Fukuzawa Series. Past Life Edition."

The mystery of Fukuzawa will become clear if you read it, but what is the conclusion?

In other words, the place where Ayutori lived in her previous life, "Tohori"

"The world is not ancient, but the present civilization has perished.

It was far in the future.

"Just because it's a past life doesn't mean it's the past.

"In the first place, it could simply be a dream that Ayutori had...

Another corner for episodes that ended up not being drawn

However, Tabafu is Kon-senpai's "next life."

When Kon-senpai loses consciousness, he starts talking about the future, and when Ayutori gets drunk, he starts going back in time.

Ayutori and Kon-senpai got drunk, and the two of them

They start muttering about the past and the future, and at one point Ayutori goes back to "Tohori" and Kon-senpai goes all the way to "Tabafu," and suddenly their stories start to click.

Tatsun watches it with a confused look on his face.

I was also thinking about something like that.

I don't think I'll be able to include this in a special edition, so I'll just write it here.

The setting of the Colma village, which at first glance appears to be set in the Yayoi period, is based on old Yayoi period documents published more than 30 years ago.

New evidence is being discovered all the time, and what is contained in documents from 30 years ago is now a world of lies reminiscent of the Yayoi period.

Isn't it perfect for this stage?

Episode 2: Detecteve Girls Final

This story takes a step further into the friendship between Ayutori and Tatsun.

Also, there's the story of the limp Kon-senpai who returns to his parents' house.

When volume 6 of "Soremachi" was released, I had the opportunity to hold a signing event.

One of the readers who came to the event commented on the character introduction of the same volume.

In the end, Kon-senpai is Ayutori's "best friend"

Tatsun mentioned that they have become "friends."

"Will Tatsun become Ayutori's best friend?" he was asked.

I immediately replied, "Yes, it will!"

A lot of time has passed since then, but this episode is the future I saw back then.

As the name suggests, the "Detective Girls" series involves detective-like activities, but in the end, the culprit is brought to his knees by Tatsun's pursuit.

It became known as Ayutori.

I doubt Tatsuno actually cared about or wanted to do judo in PE. She's too much of a girly girl to actually try at a physical sport that'd make her get sweaty and look unfeminine. That's like going 100% against a person whose mom made them be there. Tatsuno and Hotori actually fighting each other out of rage would result in Tatsuno winning 9/10 times.

Episode 12: "Major Incident"

The story of Professor Moriaki's love letter has been resolved.

The title is a play on words, "Dog Incident," but the story also has the same plot where the three of them, Ayutori, Tatsun, and Sanada, investigate the case.

The multipurpose room is the same room that Ayutori escapes to in the final episode, "Girl A." In front of this room is the second-year building, and one floor above that is the third-year building.

In "Girl A," looking down from the third-year classroom, you can see a shadow that looks like Ayutori in the multipurpose room. But who cares about such small details?

As I wrote in the "Time Bomb" section, it was a lot of work cutting and trimming this story to make it neat and tidy.

What helped them in this were the deductive reasoning skills of third-year Ayutori and some nice hints from Tatsun. I was stunned by Ayutori's ability to quickly narrow down the suspect from just one photo, saying "You're amazing!" Tatsun's assistance was also perfectly coordinated, and it was clear that they had grown.

And finally, Sanada gets his moment to shine! He takes out all the frustration he's built up over the long, unsatisfying period on the female teacher.

Ayutori dreams of getting involved in crimes like in a detective novel, and has even made some rather inappropriate remarks, but when she actually comes face to face with the "culprit," she is powerless to do anything against the unexpected counterattack. The storyline of "Nameko" ends with a slightly bitter feeling about what it means to really be embroiled in a crime.

Kon's relationships are really interesting. Her earlier teenage years were dominated by one very jealous friendship, with a friend who doted on her but also monopolised her, and then ultimately betrayed her. This has really coloured her interactions with other people but she recognises in herself when she's being unreasonable. She's fearful of being betrayed or cast-off and lashes out because of that, but she also deeply wants to be accepted, loved and admired.

It's hard to tell how much genuine affection the other girl held for Kon. Did she just feel better herself about being Kon's one true friend, when Kon was held by the whole class to be beautiful and unapproachable? In this panel it look like she's genuinely happy/admiring that Kon has a chance to pursue a new interest >>281427259. But what she did to Kon was so awful, and she's clearly very uncomfortable when contact is re-established >>281427295. Is that because she feels guilty? She feels Kon will want revenge? She recognises a childish jealousness in how she interacted with Kon before? Just because of the awkwardness of 4 years having passed?

We can't really know, and Ishiguro actually denies us closure on-panel here too which is an interesting authorial choice. But Kon seems to have found some when we see her travelling with Hotori later.

I don't think she was a genuine friend. The implication that she stopped playing guitar is enough to convince me that she never really cared about it and it was all for show. She intentionally cut people off from Kon because it made her feel special. Now she's facing a Kon who's no longer a kid and she's intimidated because she isn't in control.

Yeah, I'd probably agree. The panel top left here >>281427259 is the only thing that doesn't really work in the interpretation for me. But she could have been thinking, like, "I'm so good for coming here with Kon, she could never done this on her own" or something.

It actually is very adult of Kon to realise she was falling into the same kind of unhealthy codependency with Hotori as she previously had with this girl. So even though she gets annoyed at the mismatch between Hotori's feelings and her own when she was waiting for Hotori, she is able to resolve it internally and move on without disregarding their friendship as a whole. That's really great to see.

I can sort of see why Ishiguro said Kon might be able to develop romantic feelings for Hotori, but not the reverse. Kon clearly attaches very closely to the people she likes if they allow her to. I get the impression romance for her would be much more about loving and being loved by someone she cares about rather than anything else. If Joushima keeps persevering he probably has a chance.

The backstory has been explained in pieces through the manga. Zanari concinced Kon to join the ping pong club. They became "friends" until Kon got on the team while Zanari was benched. The other girls in the club and Zanari conspired to get Kon injured to get her off the team. Zanari pushed Kon down the stairs and Kon became withdrawn from everyone since.

I think the thing, with how immature middleschoolers are, is that such friendships can be genuine at times and very abusive and exploitive at other times. The scenes at the concert could have easily been genuine, while at school she was very different and manipulative for the most time.

The way i see it is that this relationship basicly shaped Kon entirely, while i interpret it that for Zanari this whole thing was much less important. I see her slightly guilty face she makes in >>281427295 as a sign that she probably didn't really think about what happened back in middle school.

Zanari might not have intentionally meant anything malicious but her actions were selfish. Going to the concert and learning guitar didn't mean anything to her otherwise she wouldn't have been able to throw those things away so easily.

Hotori and Zanari are really polar opposites. Zanari tried to isolate Kon while Hotori pushed her to make new friends. Zanari pretended to share interests with her but Hotori can't pretend to care about music. Zanari got rid of Kon as soon as it was inconvenient but Hotori would kill for kon. Their cheery personalities might have been what attracted Kon to begin with but beyond that they couldn't be more different.

Episode 1 "Kon Senpai Special"

This is the story of Kon-senpai overcoming his anxiety.

This is the same day as Volume 15, Chapter 117, "Kyou," which I mentioned briefly earlier.

It would be fine to just say, "A special episode in which Kon-senpai appears throughout," but it also has the added meaning of "Someone special to Kon-senpai" and "Kon-senpai is a special person," giving it a triple meaning.

Up until now, Kon-senpai has seemed to be one-sidedly dependent on Ayutori, but after defeating Zanari (?), he shows some growth.

This concludes the storyline of "Kon Senpai."

The idea of a painter who murders via the influence of their paintings is interesting because they would presumably have to practice, in fact Moriaki's grandfather was practicing (if we trust Ryou on that).

So like, would they themselves be affected by their paintings? Would they be unable to look at them? How would they test the paintings out to make sure they worked? Maybe they would have to kidnap someone and show them the paintings as they worked on them until they painted one that finally killed them.

This is also a fun chapter in light of Ryou's abstract painting, because you can't quite convince yourself she wouldn't do it.

I only mentioned Saturn specifically because of the spotlight, which makes it all the more bizarre that, realistically, it's almost certainly not about Saturn at all and this makes the entire interpretation of that comes off as a thinly veiled attempted to make it seem less horrifying of an image by linking it to a mythological story that itself portrays the concept in a very sanitized way (since the devoured children are eventually rescued intact).

Episode 10

"evil

This is the final installment of the bad things left behind by Moriaki Kozaburo.

The mystery of the "red painting" is revealed.

For this story, I created a palm-sized portrait of

I made a bullfinch and rolled it around while drawing.

Suzu-chin also makes one in the story, and it's something similar.

Ryochin's riskiness, willing to take small risks in order to get a ``thrill'', and the evil research left behind by her grandfather come together to create the ``evil'' ending of the storyline.

It might be a bad ending.

At the end, after a murky monologue titled "Ryouchin's story back then...", the story returns to the subtitle of Volume 1, Chapter 4, which was the starting point for the story of the picture.
