Kazusa was the main girl, and this was plainly obvious; not only was she introduced first, when she was separated Haruki never stopped being in love with her. The writer tried REALLY hard to pretend that there was actual love triangle, but he just couldn't sell it because JP moral law requires the MC to never show insincerity / lack of true love etc, or make any mistake of morals so once in love may never fall out of it. His relationship with Setsuna was clearly nothing more than "taking responsibility" and coping about how he'll learn to be happy with her etc. You have to be blind not to get this when reading it, it's SUPER obvious. They really should have made Yuu more likeable in the earlier side stories. Hikari should have traumatized him bad somehow by not realizing it, or he should have gone out on a limb and out himself out there then got burned bad... give him SOME reason to be afraid of opening up to Hikari instead of just being afraid without trying.
At least this chapter redeemed him a little bit by showing him actively pursuing Yami and being crushed by her.
But unless theres another reveal of some childhood trauma between them, theres no reason for drama between Hikari and Yuu and his actions don't make sense.

I don't think that's better, and just makes her look snooty. In the story, he gets the message because of her kindness to him: she sees him as a vulnerable little brother who needs protecting. The idea of improving himself is to change that weak image she has of him, but his efforts and ability aren't enough to shake it off through their childhood.

Hikari admits to herself that she wasn't into romance at the time, never saw him as a man, and probably would've rejected him. His assessment was objectively correct. Confessing anyway just cripples his future chances. Improving himself to subtly change her impression was a better plan, but he couldn't catch up, and then her changing schools threatened to separate them further.

Kazusa pretends be a bad girl but she is even more passive than Haruki and Hikari combined.
The VN needs the plot-twist of Setsuna seeing her kissing Haruki in that night to justify her, without that, Setsuna is definitely the best girl and much better than the autistic emo disaster girl.
And not, Yami is less responsible than Kazusa from all the trainwreck, at least before the Judas kiss in front of Hikari (her airport moment, and Kazusa-Haruki kiss there was worse, because were consciently decided).
