As for nihilism the entire manga is exploration of just that in visual medium. Starting off with teleportation that emphasizes humans as meat. then fragility of human life and then civilization as a whole in the face of various horrors, duplication horror and problems of identity. The final alien lecture just spells all of it out so I don't think it can be called unfitting. Even so there's this final bit about souls subverting it. I for one reject the god alien speech and it's conclusions, but see it as a fitting ending to Gantz

I actually think it's the opposite of that, and it's more like tbe stuff in Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy or Albert Camus books, which central thesis is about living with meaning in an inherently meaningless and absurd reality. Not that I support Oku's message or conclusions, but all the absurd violence, deaths and negation of God's existence (or at least benevolence) in tbis manga are always immediately followed by an act of humanity that makes life worth living, and I think that's a deliberate choice by Oku. He's just very clumsy about it as a writer, but his work is decidedly anti-nihilist.
