Ironically, I think picking such a roundabout phrasing loses the intended ambiguity by being a bit too far removed from the possible romantic implications. As is, I wouldn't assume the raw line was 好き. "Treasure" perhaps has more of that undertone because it's much less common to use it that way. And then there's Thighssault Lily's "I adore you".

I was definitely crutching with the TL note. But I think it's fine in context. I can see old timey romantics saying "I care for you" in line with "I have feelings for you," and it's part of the backwards interpretation of Onee-sama voice I've gone with. I tried "adore" at an anon's suggestion last thread, but it ended up sounding a little too actively romantic. Like it's a sharp word to draw out when the scene is soft as if they're almost accidentally letting their feelings slip on their breath. I dunno maybe it's some kinda synaesthetic theme autism. Translation is about digging yourself a hole.

>>281409528
I like this interpretation. The rose petals fall when Kasumi is at her most dreamlike, the weight of the world lifting with Haruyo's words/presence. The only exception was chapter 4 when they rained on Kasumi in bed. I don't know if that was her subconscious recognition Haruyo's warmth wasn't gone even if she'd abandoned her. And maybe their disappearance as she cries is her own rejection of that warmth as she decides to break off their relationship. Because in part that decision wasn't out of bitterness towards Onee-sama but self-loathing building the rejection into something she felt she deserved. After all the petals' next appearance is Haruyo's apology letter. As angry as it made her, Kasumi trusted Onee-sama would never deliberately hurt her. She felt the warmth in that apology.
So returning to the snow, I think it's that blurring where it's both cold and comfort. She wouldn't know the coziness of this warmth if it weren't for the cold outside. I wish winter were real.
There's also consideration to give to what specifically the hanging, sometimes wilting roses mean, but that's a topic for next chapter.

>>281410445
I can't spoil AriSaku's fluffy reputation just yet. Everyone already thinks they're safe from chapter 4.
Going to start changing next chapter when Kasumi's self-sabotage kicks in.

C'mon, don't hold out on us. I can agree adore might lean too far towards romantic implications. In terms of vocal sensation, 好き definitely lends itself to that idea of a whisper, particularly because Japanese tends to truncate its short -u and -i morae. In contrast 大好き and 愛してる have very pronounced leading dipthongs. I think katakana-engrish illustrates the differences in phonetics between English and Japanese, even though it's not phonetically accurate.

That being said like is quite simply a very ordinary, common, and unembellished word, yet in context can convey the most meaningful phase in the world. 好き is much like that, and I like the idea of preserving how often it gets thrown around.

I love semantics.

I'm not sure Haruyo will be that hurt simply because she won't realize what a betrayal it is yet. The problem isn't so much Kasumi twisting Haruyo's words to search out Onee-sama^2, it's that she tried to give Haruyo away. Kasumi's warped attempt at considering Haruyo's feelings utterly disregarded them. And if she could tell that, I don't think Paruyo would know how to react. She'd ironically be hit with the same thought she's the only one feeling something serious here. But I don't see how that could come to light just yet.

I'm curious how Sayori's flashback ends. This was built up to as heavy end of volume drama but then flipped expectations around. The normal fear would be Sayori intruding on or breaking the relationship, but instead she respects it. The next cliche would be her denying it's love, but there haven't been hints of that either. And that's what Kasumi wants to hear anyway. Someone to deny rather than support. So the real drama might be Sayori validating them and possibly encouraging Kasumi and Haruyo make their relationship romantic. Though her story hasn't gone far in that direction.

The others were all pretty similar. Variations of like, love, adore, fond.
I kind of touched on it after chapter 6 but this is where that "lens" of the translator always comes to mind. You always get a slightly distorted image. But the interpretive nature of language makes it fun seeing what layers of meaning others choose to enhance and diminish, since nothing translates 1:1. I used to avoid letting the translator feel "present" running from axe after axe sorta makes you stop giving a fuck but now opening up those interpretations feels better.
Cause yeah, honestly, "like" is still perfect. Soft yet heavy. Common yet special. Just the context of the RP supercedes it to me. "Care" is a little reminiscent of that.

I think you're overlooking the other reason Haruyo might be so deeply hurt that Kasumi sought out an oneesama (年上). Kasumi's motivations are one thing, but you can't think all of the insecurity Haruyo felt when she saw Kasumi's necktie has gone away just because it is no longer on the surface.

Paruyo may not be knowledgeable about emotional betrayal yet, but shared secrets are something that children if anything care more about than adults. Sekkrit club treehouse and all that. She was always serious about keeping the secret, even when getting advice from her brother she only told him the bare minimum, probably less, and I don't think that's because she'd have much trouble coming out as gay to her family, least of all to fuckboi niichan. She's not ashamed of their relationship, she just wants to keep it between the two of them.

The other dimension is that she's already overcompensating to hell and back for her inadequate oneesama age. Kasumi looking for a real older older sister would tell her that that's still not enough and that would hurt her a lot. This would be much less of a problem if the way she finds out about it is Kasumi presenting her a personal oneesama on a silver platter, but Satori seems to have very little interest in going along with that charade so it's probably going to be something else.

Gotta admit, I've been enjoying rereading everything translated. It's a different perspective and experience, but that shouldn't surprise me given the nature of the Japanese lines.

Personally I'd probably have gone with dear cause it fits the platonic/romantic range I perceived for those 2 lines. I completely overlooked the commonness aspect.

Yeah I'm overestimating Haruyo's maturity. We haven't seen in her head in a while and it's easy to forget she has no idea what she's doing given she keeps saying just the right thing. Kasumi would probably make the same mistake.

Fond. I quite like that one too (I thought of it after I had made that post). It certainly works in the context of you inverting Haruyo's tone shifts. The issue then arises from switching back to Kasumi's echoing of the phrase. "really fond" is a bit too dissonant, almost oxymoronic in the distinct manners of speech characterized by each word. You're practically forced to pigeonhole Kasumi's line into a formal tone with a modifier such as quite fond, truly fond, or terribly fond, which is not only out of character for Kasumi but also contradicts the imouto LARP.
