Absolutely. He did deserve it and I'm glad he was killed off, and in fact I did like his fight against /our/ guys, but it's such an odd last battle to end the manga on since we're pretty much witnessing the humans being good sports since the actual threat was already neutralized off panel. Tbf, I think Oku's last narrative bullet was the room of truth, and since he had already said his piece last volume this was just him going through the motions to end it.

It really felt like they were several endings.
The room of truth.
The nishi shit.
The actual ending.

And so on.

Here's how I fix this mess of an arc:

1/When the team gets teleported the first time, make the mission much longer. Introduce George Clooney, Sekine and Kaze's gf. Of course squads that worked together are beamed together. They need to destroy some anti-teleportation machinery that is stalling global progress. K1 is fighting much harder to get back to Tae. K2 interprets this as being inferior. To make things worse, she saves him bith of them from death. K1 is thankful, K2 is ungrateful. They finish the mission and expect to be teleported back. K2 wants to be teleported back with K1 to find Tae, K1 pushes him back telling him not to be an asshole and stop lying to himself about his feelings. Cherry finds his gf dead and snaps.
2/K1 tracks down Tae to the ship. Things go like in the manga except he finds her and takes ger back home.
3/Meanwhile K2 and his team ask for volunteers. The osaka players and the other dudes join. Cherry is not there. Kurono asks Gantz to teleport him. Gantz does that. Still angry and unstable, he explains that he wants to exterminate all the aliens. The team looks uncomfortable at the thought of killing all the aliens, even the children. Cherry calls them out on their bullshit and flies away. K2 thinks about how he'd react if the same happened to his girl. He pictures Reika instead of Tae. The new team teleports to save civilians.
4/ After securing a safe space for Tae, K1 is teleported again. This time he only finds cherry. In the meanwhile, cherry has been slaughtering civilians. Unlike K2, K1 empathises with him because he saw what could have happened to Tae. Before they blow up the facility they have infiltrated. Cherry's hallucinations/ the soul of tonkotsu and sakata start feeling even more real and real. Cherry starts losing it, wanting to blow up the whole ship instead of defeating it. K1 tells him they can revive Tonkotsu. He answers him the same way Sakata did " human life is not that cheap "

Cherry teleports Kurono before blowing up the station. At the very last moment, he looks at Tonkotsu and makes the explosion non-critical.
4/After saving more civilians, the teams gets hacked and gets teleported. They get teleported to the alien's version of a colluseum. They have to fight different species of aliens. They won but with sacrifices. Reika dies protecting K2, murder manlet and long hair dude die as well. They manage to break the field protecting the audience and start slaughtering them. Then they hear a huge explosion and they start getting teleported. The americans tell them that a series of coordianted attacks has incapacitated the ennemy. They lead them to the room of truth. K1 is already there. The sequence goes the same, except this time K2 does a small speech calling out the alien's bullshit before jumping to attack them. He explodes but he has inspired the humanity inside the room, everyone points their guns at the so called gods. They chuckle and say that they are done answering questions. Humans are worthless, but they are amusing. They teleport everyone back to the ship. The final fight sequence goes mostly the same. The only difference being that the aliens have revived all the humans who died in the invasion on earth, which is the final surprise for the reader in the epilogue.

I've read Gantz way back then when I was a teen and basically enjoyed it only for tits and explosion.
Reading it now again as an adult really makes me appreciate the tits, explosions and the message of the indomitable human spirit defeating the uncaring and nihilistic universe.
When I first read the "room of truth" like K2 I got shocked and moved, now I realize that the aliens where just memeing and K2 was right on everything.
Basically I feel like I've defeated nihilism myself.
Overall I would say the manga is a 7,5/10 but due to my history and personal liking it grows to 8,5/10.
I know there is better stuff out there, but it's just the story I have with the manga.

I'm beginning to think that this ending could have worked better regarding Oku presenting the alien invaders as a parallel to humans who do awful things but are still mostly redeemable by copying Macross one more time. That is to say, have a small group of them survive including Fura and integrate to earth society along with some of the surviving alien immigrants, but still establish the notion that their coexistence with humans will take quite some time to be harmonious, if ever.

It could have been fleshed out better if the rest of the multiple subplots were paced better, especially if some of the human torture porn by the aliens was trimmed. Also, besides Sakata and Tonkotsu, Sakurai always seemed to respect Kurono, Reika and Kaze in particular and it's tragic how he never got to interact with any of them while going through his Tetsuo meltdown.

Gantz is finally done. I only browsed a couple of threads since I had already read it before but it was interesting regardless. I was reminded of just how weird of a plot point the vampires were, especially since they ceased to be a factor so soon after their introduction. They were basically just used to get rid of Izumi for whatever reason.

I feel that the series has such a cool setting and premise that it would be easy to create any number of successful spin-offs, but I've never checked them out beyond skimming through some of the feudal Japan one. People fighting strange aliens in a death game is pretty much endlessly recyclable.

Now that it's all over I'll explain why Reika is the low IQ choice over Tae:
How did Reika first fall for Kurono? She saw him being a badass by killing 'monsters' in her first mission, while still trying to help the noobs unlike Izumi.
However, she didn't actually know anything about Kurono as a person. She would have fallen for anyone who did the same. If Kato had been there, it would have been a repeat of the Kishimoto situation. This wasn't love, it was her female survival instinct telling her to stick to the strong man and exchange sex for protection.
Now Tae, she didn't know anything about Gantz and she loved Kurono for who he was on a day to day life.
And guess what? Boring, peaceful days for the rest of his life is what Kurono gets once the whole thing is over. Tae's relationship thrives in this, but not Reika's, since the reason she fell for Kurono will be gone with the conflict. Eventually Reika will get bored of Kurono since he won't be able to impress her in combat anymore, and dump/cheat on him.
tl;dr Reika needs carnage to stay wet, Tae doesn't.
