Manga artists have been writing pairings like this for shonen anime for at least 50 years.

Okarun may be the most visually repulsive nerd i've seen in manga in quite a while, both in terms of mannerism and appearance. I would praise the author for it if the manga was about a bunch of fun nerdy dudes dicking around supernatural with hoes far the fuck away, but this awkward, utterly retarded "romance" is by far the worst thing about the story because there's not a single chance in hell Momo would ever fall for someone like him, or even talk to him, or treat him as anything but dirt.

Okarun is not ugly, and while he's awkward he's got plenty of good qualities that women tend to find attractive in men. He's brave, caring, hard working, etc.
He's short but he's like 15 or 16 so that's less of an issue at the moment as long as he's at least Momo's height, and in the latest chapters he's among the fittest if not the fittest boy in his school year.

In this case, Okarun has a huge advantage because he literally has super powers and has shared life and death situations that are also a shared secret with both Momo and Aira (and Bamora). It's clear that both Aira and Momo care more about the super power battles than the high school hierarchy or conventional attractiveness, and despite Okarun's "loser" status at the beginning of the series, he has relatively few flaws. His lack of confidence is pretty much fixed and he's /fit/, serious and honest.

Height is one of those things women instinctively find appealing in men even though we just cannot understand it.
