For those confused, final volume of nisei really does just randomly end with a story about Robin mask.
We go straight from having no closure at all on all the demon seed stuff, to "hey let's cut back to how Robin mask married your mother"
Final arc barely even got closure in the end, it just kinda ended

What a weird choice. And it's not like him appearing would have necessarily meant for Kevin to be less of edgelord, they could have just handwaved it "Warsman made me realize I respect you but damn I still don't like you."

>Robin: I put you through hard training

>Warsman: I put you through hard training

It feels like he reacts well to structure in his life going by how warsman treated him, it seems like he would react well to Robin's harsh training considering warsman was almost the same
Only thing I can figure is Kevin rebelled because he thought he couldn't live up to his dad

This is sort of the same conclusion Ashuraman and a lot of the other antagonists come to in the revival. They aren’t justice choujin, they still love to cheat and kill their opponents, they will never be goody two-shoes like Kinnikuman and friends. Still they can be honorable devils who recognize the bonds of friendship without totally forsaking who they are. Nisei’s writing is messy but there’s bits of something good hidden here that will be refined in the future.

Sunshine's part of the demon seed arc not only successfully connects his motivation from when he first appeared in Nisei to the demon seed arc and gives him closure, it did so without completely butchering his character in the process.

I figure getting accolades, respect, and publicity as the face of the Justice Choujin helped him refine his demeanor, but with it came the belief that he was Justice himself, which then leads to his arrogance. I guess his dad was more proud of having a strong son than a well-mannered one.

Since I doubt the last 40 pages will have particularly relevant information, some random thoughts as a first timer before I forget :

>hilariously mismanaged secondary cast, I really didn't expect Terryman's kid to be THIS irrelevant out of all people, but I'm kinda sad Wally never got action too
>overall agree that Mantaro really feels too cowardly, Suguru's constant giving up was also annoying through the OG but he felt more consistent once the stakes were set
>Kevin is really not a tenth as bad as you guys were constantly complaining about, I honestly don't know what the big deal is. Maybe I'll change my mind in the Utag storytime, but I was more annoyed with Warsman
>The Meat worship is a bizarre angle to try when he's Nisei's worst character by a mile. Complete killjoy, constant nagging, half the time you feel he really would rather be somewhere else and hate Mantaro with a passion.
>People say Nisei is bad because it's edgy (not completely untrue), but I feel the series would be better if it was a more straightforward edgier take on Kinnikuman. I feel the worst parts of Nisei is when it tries to have some moral, everytime it comes out as schizophrenic

Overall, it feels definitely awkward, which is unfortunate because the elements are there. Most of the new characters are solid, Kevin / Mantaro is a very funny rival dynamic that needed to be used more, villains were surprisingly entertaining and I feel Nisei hits a nice middle ground between gimmicks and more technical wrestling that neither of the other series manage.
Well, honestly I'd keep at it at that if it wasn't for the Chojin Olympics. Seriously, what the fuck was up with that arc? It feels like everyone there went insane, including the authors. It has no tonal continuity with the rest of the manga at all. Was Yudetamago having a bad year?

In my opinion? Yeah. Mantaro is of course the protagonist and gets the most fights, if the friend group is barely going to contribute, Mantaro needs to grow and learn in SOME way. Make him keep the lessons he was taught between arcs, let him have a love interest that feels like she has faith in his ability to save the day even if she can't stand his immature side and doesn't recur to shitting on him constantly, gives us more little things like him being into stargazing that show he's not a complete fuck up, just lazy and rather cowardly. Meat is meant to be his closest friendship, give them moments together outside of coaching for Mantaro to think back to when saving Meat.

Kevinwank is obviously there because of his popularity, so embrace it: give us that reunion with Warsman, make them tag team. Show him realizing he no longer gets fullfiment from being a jerk after almost killing Mantaro, don't just let us infer he did some soul searching the next time he shows up. Give him scenes with Robin.

Either commit to the manga being the Mantaro & Kevin show or give the supporting cast actual room to breath.

He can do the fire of inner strength and lantern better than mantaro, everyone loves him, Kevin didn't actually lose against voltman and Ashuraman so his perfect record remains unchecked, the story bends over backwards to say his every action is correct while the story bends over to say mantaro is literal shit on the ground at all times. And, well, that's it for Kinnikuman Nisei's first run.

The Ultimate Chojin Tag series continued the series a few months after this part concluded, and Great All Out Chojin Assault ran concurrently between the two halves. Nisei ran from 1998 to 2011 for a total of 57 volumes, then the revival restarted the original series that autumn. Yudetamago has been making sequels to Kinnikuman for about 27 years straight now. How much longer do they have left in them? Hard to say. That being said, I'm glad to see that they can leave a legacy that goes beyond past successes and forges a new road ahead. Not many creators can say they did that.

A lesson I take away from this manga that applies to many battle shonen is the feeling that everyone can be the hero of their own story. Having characters forced into positions to be support for the MC just feels draining, and I think Yudetamago must have seen that in the reception to Nisei. Check Mate, Terry the Kid, Gazelleman, Seiuchin, Jade, all these youngsters get defeated for the sake of hyping up the next big antagonist, only for Mantaro to power up and do a Muscle Millennium. The way characters like Big Body or Atlantis or Junkman get treated in the revival would normally be seen as insane for most series, but somehow they make them work. The world feels fuller, not in just that they have big lore drops featuring things you recognize, but characters have dynamics, grow, change, and learn to become better than they were before.

Yudetamago must have seen a bit of themselves in their work, after a string of axed series that could never reach the heights of Kinnikuman, and to say nothing of their contemporaries at the time. However, they eventually found their groove again and remembered how much fun creating manga is, and they're still going at it, finding new ways to bring back old ideas and freshen them up to feel exciting. I've only been a fan for about a year, but going on the journey and seeing a pair of high schoolers not only define, but redefine the entire medium is equal parts heartwarming and encouraging.

It's not about fancy bloodlines or cursed devil genes or lopsided relationships. There's always room to grow, there's always ways to get better. Don't feel like the world's ended just because you've made mistakes. You could wallow in despair for the rest of your life, or you can move on and make it a distant memory. That's the kind of lesson that should be taught in stories.

Very well said its funny looking at Yude and seeing how much they evolved compared to their contemporaries; Tsukasa Hojo went through his own Nisei phase with Angel Heart and now just sort of costs off the City Hunter brand not doing anything interesting with it, Tetsuo Hara and Buronson has essentially been rehashing the same manga with Souten no Ken but ts clear that their passion for the franchise is completely gone, before his death Akira Toriyama was essentially just using Dragon Ball Super a playground for his worst ideas and wasn't interested in evolving beyond the same formula, and Masami Kurumada just flat out drove Saint Seiya to the ground to the point where not even diehard fans want anything to do with it now. Here we are in 2025 where Kinnikuman is receiving its best material by the original creators and the fanbase coming be more overjoyed and that's only because their passion for the franchise got reignited after trudging it through the mud.

It really is staggering to compare Nisei to the original and realize that aside from Demon Seed no supporting character gets a single win aside from Terry at the very start of the manga. The first devil choujin arc in the original I think is where Kinnikuman truly took off for me as something special in the sense that you'd almost never know who'd come out on top in the battles, there'd be twist and turns and final upsets going both ways which is entirely absent in Nisei because everyone always jobs terribly. I think the best example of Yude learning from this is the crazy upset of Black Hole's return in the revival, I don't think there's ever been a supporting character before or since who just straight up wins two fights in a row the way he does, and yet it's amazing and feels like great payoff.
Of course it's not just about winning or losing, Leopardon redeems himself entirely through not dying in 5 seconds and that's just as good, but the fact a one-time mook infamous for his previous results gets that kind of treatment really shows the difference in the two series and what makes one of them exciting and the other frustrating.

It's kinda funny in a way. Terry really didn't want to be like his dad, so he ended up doing so by not being a central figure to the Justice Chojin gang. It didn't help that Scarface having Double Toe Hold and Buffalo Branding, upgrades to Terryman techniques that Kid really should have thought of, made him look obsolete.

>>overall agree that Mantaro really feels too cowardly, Suguru's constant giving up was also annoying through the OG but he felt more consistent once the stakes were set

It's a side effect of Mantaro being the only one of the Justice gang to get fights. OG spread the wins out among the side cast with exceptions. Mantaro is the only one to fight and win in so much of Nisei that they can't have him develop out of being a coward TOO early because he's still the Gag Character Buttmonkey at the same time.

Gags are fine, but it's literally just mantaro most of the time, so there's this unsuccessful balancing act being done.

>>Kevin is really not a tenth as bad as you guys were constantly complaining about, I honestly don't know what the big deal is. Maybe I'll change my mind in the Utag storytime, but I was more annoyed with Warsman

Like other anons have said, the story bends over backwards to make sure he doesnt flat out loose or is right in tthe situation when he really shouldn't be. Him being number one in all but the last popularity poll of Nisei's original run most likely has something to do with that and it's more than most here would like.

It felt like Ikemen's sister was the closest thing to this. From the end of the olympics to the end of Demon Seed, it felt like she had more faith in Mantaro than Rinko did even when he did dumb shit. Meanwhile Rinko gets the love triangle with Jade out of nowhere, and constantly acts like She can't be seen with Mantaro and doesn't even care about him as a friend. It got really bad for her with the Final fight in the Demon Seed arc.

It's a shame too because they have that cute moment with her secretly checking up on him through articles about the BIS challenge and him ditching Royal stuff to go celebrate her birthday with her right before the Olympics start.

>People say Nisei is bad because it's edgy (not completely untrue), but I feel the series would be better if it was a more straightforward edgier take on Kinnikuman.

Nisei could have had something going if it used the fact that people and culture had gotten edgier between the end of the OG series to the start of Mantaro's story as a setting point.

>The Old Cast members, both Justice and Evil Chojin have certain ways and methods of doing things. Some of the new gen follow these ways but there are characters that think the old fashioned stuff doesn't cut it anymore. As a result, you have a lot of Justice and Idol Chojin that fight more violently than the ones in the past and dont seem that different from Evil Chojin. This is why there's more death in Nisei than the original.

>Characters like Kid, Kevin, and Shiva all reject the old rules of the ring to different degrees. Kid still has his complext about Terryman but it's mixed in with thinking about how "Lame" his dad was for not having a big flashy Finisher, something that was an actual complaint about the Terry family in the west when UM was airing. Kevin fights brutally. He's not EVIL per say but he's closer to Robin when he started trying to kill Suguru in the first olympics arc.

>Mantaro goes for the older ways, mainly because there's less of a chance of death, but occasionally slips into going harder when some techniques don't work. Jade and Seiuchin are in the same category. Those two get more wins but also their fights are harder because they aren't going for the kill, even with Jade having the Red Rain of Berlin.

>Big factor between old and new ways/rule is that the New mindset of 'Doesnt matter as long as an evil chojin loses' is that there's a higher chance of the job being done quicker. Because of this, the public is more accepting of death fights than before. Old ways are harder, but open up more paths for Redemption and Friendship Power to show and pay off.

Terryman seemed pretty good. The beef between him and Kid seems entirely one sided, because he's just mad that everyone saw him as Suguru's partner only. Despite that not exactly being the case

I hope Robin's dick is THAT good, otherwise her father was right, being married to a chojin sucks.
