Reading HxH earlier arcs shouldn't be difficult for me now. Succession War is still not easy at all, but it's definitely doable with a vocab and grammar dictionary nearby. My reading speed, understanding of slang and contractions improved dramatically as well. My current goal is to reach 6000 vocab and finish N3 grammar, perhaps half of N2 before the next batch of chapters, so I can truly enjoy reading HxH kino finally in its original language.

Thank you Togashi for giving me ample time to truly appreciate your masterpiece.

The morena card game lacks stakes. Its a failure from a storytelling and game design perspective. The drama is lost due to the obfuscation of the strategies, the reader is not "invited in" to partake. And most egregiously of all:
morena's "trap card" ability has no visual cue to its activation, there's no set up or payoff to Bork failing due to being led into a trap.

Its inert. This, more than anything, is the failure of the card game.

The setup was Borksen trying to make it seem like she was safeguarding herself from Morena cheating. The Payoff is that her own plan backfired because she isn't as aware of nen abilities as she needed to be

It also gave us a look at how people like Borksen are going to have to content with information warfare which is a major part of the arc. The card game was designed with zero stakes because there's barely any wiggle room to succeed, no odds to play, playing a single round, focused on brute forcing exposition (the information gleaned does not enable strategy to change in the game, hence superfluous to the game structure), and with a poorly explained and shown "turn".

Borksen cheating didn't need to be hidden from the viewer the way it did, morena's punishment also didn't need to be hidden the way it did... and the end result is a blunt instrument serving the plot first, and with a very limited amount of enjoyment to be gained from reading it.

The only reason she had to put in an escape clause is due to vows and limitations. I re-read it after making my response. But I don't think another character needs to go through it unless they can get new and more interesting info out of Morena.

I enjoy their rapport yes. The mind games were basic since Morena had the odds in her favor and a failsafe for cheating. Borksen simply didn't know enough about Nen, nor trust her 50/50 chance to risk inevitable death and got trapped. The meat isn't the game but the conversations. Now I want to see how Borksen plays the rest of this arc

The journey is the point, the little detours like the card game.

The last batch was kind gamechanging in how much further beyond it went than just the succession contest. Lots of stuff going on other than just the princes and they no longer even seem like the most important part of the arc anymore, to me at least. I used to think that if things were narrowed down to a single prince being alive and they won the battle then it would mean the arc is going to wrap up soon after but now I can see the situation of a single prince being left standing and all sorts of shit is still happening on the boat.

/a/ is a perfectly reasonable group to view and analyze to this end. Interested fans post and show their excitement. Peak excitement was seen in the Chrollo Hisoka fight. But most of the Succession War chapter dumps generated high interest, high rates of posting and a high quality of discussion after they were done.

This trend was broken with the latest dump. Discussion couldn't be sustained any more. Posting fell off enormously hard, where previously it had been strong and organic, focused on discussing the contents of the latest chapters.

On paper everything is cool, but the card game takes up 3.5 chapters, Benjamin’s martial takes up .5 and we have little to go off of it, a chapter spent on hnrigh and Chrollo working around shit that we have little to go off on, 405 is pretty great, haleknbrug vs Benjamin chapters are good but again we still have little to go off of, most of 404 is Halkenburg talking to himself about his ability and unknown plans

Do I think it’s as serious as that fool in the thread is making it out to be? Nope. Do I think the content of the batch plays a part in the current lack of discussion? Yep.

Morena's ability by nature offers her opponent's agency within the game and cannot force them to consent and join her unless the explicitly break the rules and cheat. Morena herself never experienced this and lived most of her life as rapemeat. The game perfectly aligns with this while shining a light on military bystanders like Borksen who are complicit in letting Kakin get away with the rape festivals by keeping their heads down. Borksen is offered choice and agency that was never granted to Morena.

The reveal of Morena's abuse suffered at the hands of Kakin also recontextualizes her hatred for Kakin and links her striking back at her abusers with a found family to the Phantom Troupe, who are doing the same thing. This also paints her as a direct parallel to Chrollo.

Morena was not the primary focus of the arc, in the way that the King obviously was.
First with a mysterious pregnancy, then the shock of his strength when he broke out prematurely and his callous nature and the plans he immediately put into action.

Yeah this is the problem. The game doesn't function as a game, it's solely about exposition for morena, and yet we have to have rules explained to us.

Gun gi was never explained. It was simply a backdrop for drama to play out (king is weaker than this human, this in turn puts his ideology through stress).

No such dynamic exists in morena card game. Its simple exposition, and forcing Bork to be a pawn through rules lawyering.

Morena is not shown to be a good player through this game, she simply rigs the game in her favor and kidnaps. Borksen cannot outplay morena, or isn't allowed to, and there's zero tactics involved.

The game is bad for characterization. Its just a lore dump. Its bad for borksen, bad for morena and overall worse storytelling than the gun gi game device
