The whole point of mangadex in the first place was going legit, and controlling the manga subplebbit so all links were only allowed to go to mangadex.
When that plan failed and the publishers went for their own solutions instead, they basically put both mangadex and the manga subplebbit on life support, not doing anything else more than necessary, and making their own western comics and using mangadex as advertisement for that.
Now there are more of their shitty own comics from namicomi on their front page than actual manga.
The site is dead, plebbit is dead, and their shitty western comics were dead on arrival.
I honestly hope the site dies and that the subplebbit gets shut down, and nothing of value would be lost.

This shit is just sad, and the random shenanigans they pull to pump the ratings on the western slop is pretty funny. Right now they are shilling in the front page one westoid manga from namicomi with 3 ratings total, 2 6* and 1 2* and its somehow rated 8.06*
Anonymous No.281663002 >>281663038

>and its somehow rated 8.06*
Everything starts at 8 by default and their rating system uses Bayesian averaging until a manga gets a couple thousand ratings, which essentially populates the score with dummy ratings so it's less turbulent. You can hover over to see the true rating. Been like this since day 1 for literally every series.

The manga subplebbit forces uploaders there to exclusively upload to mangadex to promote mangadex.
This has become very apparent lately since the mod there (there's only one mod) removes any posts to other places besides cubari.
So basically Mangadex has hijacked the biggest community for manga for their own interests.

No, they're banning people who links to comick, and finding all kinds of shitty excuses to do so.
So if you want to post something that's only posted on comick, you need to either post it as a gallery, or make a cubari link.
It's stupid but it is what it is. It's disgusting that mangadex is using the manga subplebbit for their own ends, but it is what it is. That's plebbit in a nut shell I guess, everyone is just using the different subplebbits for their own agendas. The front page of plebbit is basically just bot fueled propaganda these days.

People have flocked to comick and weeb central mainly. There they can find rips of official releases as well. So honestly the only thing the industry did was shooting themselves in the foot.
It's a bit more of a pain to upload for scanlators though, you have to manually get upload rights on discord for comick and weeb central doesn't allow user uploads, and batoto is batoto.
I made a new user on mangadex that I solely use with vpn for uploads. I'll probably just do that until I figure out something better. At least it's scraped by comick and all the relevant aggregators almost immediately.

It's more that asian markets are rather fragmented. Taiwan has its own publishers, Hong Kong also has its publishers, Singapore has its own publishers (well it did, I remember Chuang Yi died off and is now some shogakukan subs handing it). And that's just the ones handling mandarin releases. You also have random stuff like Indonesia releasing their own stuff and so on.

In the case of mainland china, it's more that they're currently trying to push for their own stuff, their local manhua and that stuff. I recall that back in the batoto days, part of the inclusion of webmanga was also because the chinese were offering deals to have sites host plus provide translation for their stuff.

I first knew piracy when I was 1st year middle school, so 12 years old or 17 years ago.
Before that I used to go to a bookstore and buy tankobon manga monthly from mainstream to niche, like Dragon Ball, Conan, One Piece, Naruto, YAIBA, YuYu Hakusho, Let's & Go, Aegis in the Dark, Black Butler, Fight Ippo, Law of Ueki, Doraemon, Shinchan, Kobo-chan, Miiko, Kungfu Boy Chinmi, Gash Bell, Grander Musashi, Rakugaki Fighter, Crush Gear, Gundam SEED, Gundam Wing Side Story G-Unit and so on.
But online manga piracy killed the physical manga scene here except short shoujo manga because only girls actually spend money on physical manga. There are still mainstream manga sold as premium goods for collectors. my point is, buying physical manga is no longer the main method of reading manga since piracy became a thing.

So you're trying to argue that even after the internet was fairly in use that it wasn't until later that manga piracy took off. And actually I see that you say 17 years ago, so 2008. I was already pirating Jojo before that, and One Piece. Your personal experience of finding piracy that late doesn't mean that's when it just started existing.

And while I'm not one of those people that believes all manga popularity stems from piracy letting people know about things, it definitely is a factor. If you completely wiped out piracy I'm sure it would have a negative impact on the industry because people just wouldn't know about as much as they do when they can try things out for free first.

without piracy, "problematic" japanese contents would've been naturally gatekept and legally stayed in Japan. which would be a good thing since there'd be no pressure for censorship from baka gaijin parasites. In the end, piracy killed the soul of this medium

Digital anime distribution is successful. Crunchyroll is an established brand and other players like Netflix or Disney+ also want their share.
Other media like music or games also have reasonable success with digital. It's mainly manga that falls flat and has to resort to bankruptcy tier solutions like MangaPlus to gain any sort of traction at all.

I love people like you who think everyone in Japan is fine with that kind of content. That it's definitely the US' fault and not Japanese people and the even more censorship prone China and South Korea. Especially when it comes to manga that doesn't even get translated in the US. Like the recent Ruri no Houseki stuff, where people point out that after the beginning of the manga the fanservice basically goes away. That series isn't translated into English and nobody in the west even knew about it until the anime. But they still apparently had someone from the US in the publisher's office holding a gun to their heads and telling them to remove the panty shots.

Companies failing to capitalize on the digital distribution boom is not the users problem, Nips had years to come up with something yet they prefer archaic methods like selling tokens to read chapters and wonder why they fail. Kadokawa and others should just give up and copy netflix like Jump did if they can't find a better model and don't get me started on the censorship and quality of translations. The reason piracy thrives is because they offer an outright better service and quality product for free.

Kadokawa has offered a subscription that goes beyond their own magazines. Shueisha has nothing but coins.

Kadokawa isn't even limiting their magazines to their own service.
Shueisha does has Grand Jump and Cocohana available.

I'm currently building a distributed version based off IPFS. The idea is to have a single easily served browser client which caches files on-device and contributes it to the network. Of course a server is still maintained to ensure availability but ideally for more popular titles the load is eased. No idea how to implement governance or incentivise people actually keeping files on their devices though.

Subscription models for translated manga have been tried by various companies without notable success. Manga Plus has to give everything away for free to stop people from pirating.

starting isn't what's expensive, although you still need someone to write you software
it's operating it that's expensive
are you capable of fronting a $100 000 monthly server bill?
internet isn't strained from air, somebody needs to pay for it
