I didn't watch rebuilds, but time loops exist in all forms of media, in manga too. Except mangaka is a salty eva character designer who got sidelined so he arbitrarily designed his iteration (manga) is a final one, so they diverged and now there are 2 final iterations.

The first and second movies heavily imply that they occur inside of some sort of looping timeline, where the events of evangelion happen over and over after EoE's third impact
There's many pieces of evidence in those movies pointing to this
But then the latter two movies don't elaborate on this at all, and sort of leave it as a hanging thread that never gets resolved or acknowledged

Well in the manga shinji decides how the world will continue and he resets the world bit removes all the bullshit from it, basically making it our world.
It is not a big stretch if this was not the only time the wolrd was reset, but Shinji just didn't have the resolve to decide things so he reset it without changing anything.
At least when manga ended, the original tv ending and eoe stsrted making sense, if they were different iterations.

In rebuild, the time loop is treated as a fact without any explanation of how it would come to be outside the metanarrative of "we, the anime studio, are making eva but again"
How EoE would lead into NTE is still a huge unanswered question, and it's probably never going to be answered because there is no longer room in the story for it to happen
