Classic harem anime. Tenchi is normal teenager who through odd circumstance is introduced to a harem of beautiful alien women.

It has going for it two things. First, a random harem anime has no fucking right putting so much effort into having aesthetics of technology so detailed, beautiful and alien. Example; pic related is a wooden spaceship : one of the most powerful spaceships in the galaxy. That bubble is a pocket dimension that houses a planet sized garden, powered by a tree which is also a CPU and a demigod. Unfortunately the species that use them have the Vampire The Masquerade generation problem: with increasing generations away from the original Godtree their ships are getting weaker and weaker. Take a look at some concept art if you like (the shows music is great too).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAB65caIO7M

The other draw is the characters, who answer the 'why is MC not fucking these girls?' question with 'because they are nuts'. The are in no particular order:

>Ryoko - "Space Pirate"
A sort of artificial magical demon lifeform. After rampaging across the galaxy she was sealed away in a shrine near Tenchi's home for centuries.
+/-Is beautiful as she is crazy.
+Massive crush on Tenchi.
-This means she basically stalks Tenchi, and wants his attention all the time.
-Stalking even less fun when the person doing it is Goku levels of strong, has dozens of bullshit magical powers and can do things like phase through walls when you're taking a piss.
-Implied reason for crush is that while sealed away, watching child Tenchi play was her only source of joy. Kind of creepy.
-Artificial nature is implies she doesn't really feel or taste much, probably wouldn't notice sex.
-Possibly unstable, absolutely homicidal. Introduces herself to Tenchi by pretending(?) to try and kill him and destroying his school.
+Is still best girl.
+Brought her own spaceship.
+Brought her little sister Ryo-Ohki.
+Those two are more related than you think.
CONT

Ayeka - "Space Princess"
While chasing Ryoko, is stranded on earth after getting her ship blown up.
+/-Is beautiful as she is crazy.
+Alien family literally owns earth and is insanely powerful.
-No indoor voice.
-Probably not more annoying than Ryoko to Tenchi, but it's close.
-Implied dominatrix leanings.
-Doesn't actually seem to do much, mostly seems to be there to cockblock Ryoko.
+Show wouldn't be the same without her, even if it's hard to explain what she adds.
+Brought her little sister Sasami!

Sasami - "Her Little Sister Sasami"
Tagged along with Ayeka, doesn't seem to give a shit about being stranded on a primitive alien planet.
+Beautiful, not crazy.
+Genuinely nice to Tenchi and everyone else she meets.
+Enjoys cooking, perfect wife material.
+Isn't stuck up or insane from being space royalty.
+Has crush on Tenchi, will not try to murder him for choosing wrong girl like Ryoko and Ayeka.
-Sasami is eight years old.

Mihoshi - "Space Cop"
A literal spacecop that gets stranded on earth while hunting Ryoko.
+Pretty.
+Not crazy.
+Comic relief.
+/- Brown
-Not really a legit harem member.
-Not really relevant.
-No seriously, the eight year old is treated as a more legit harem option than Mihoshi. Thanks japan.

Washu - Ryoko's deadbeat mom.
Famed galactic scientist and lunatic. Lives in a pocket dimension in Tenchi's closet like Dexter's Laboratory with more magitek and sexual harassment.
+/-Is beautiful as she is crazy.
+Smartest person in the galaxy. Like that is literally true.
-Less useful than you'd think considering.
+Still pretty useful.
-Also not really a harem candidate.
+MILF?
-Who looks like an eight year old girl.
-Occasionally straps down Tenchi for medical experimentation.
+Created Ryoko and her little sister
-Didn't do a great job.

Ryo-Ohki - "Ryoko's Little Sister"
A furry little pet girl-cat-rabbit creature hatched from a spaceship egg. No seriously.
-I refuse to explain this more than I did.

That's Kiriko's mom, and sort of a motherly figure to him, even before her son married Seina's little sister.
But before he got shanghai'd into the GP, the plan was that after both her kids had their family secret revealed and went into space, Seina would get handed off to her, more or less as her new husband.
And even after he married her daughter, she was still eager to claim her right.

Also worth noting is that while Ryoko and Ayeka are always fighting over which one of them will get Tenchi, the others four here just all accept that they can share him and live in harmony.
Washu and Sasami at least come from cultures where polygamy is common, but Mihoshi just never seemed to give it much thought and didn't worry.

Yeah, The best thing about the tv show is the consistency, unlike the OVAs which good from great (OVA 1), then decent (OVA 2), then bad (OVA 3) to whatever happens on OVA 4 and onwards.
The tv show also leads to two movies, Tenchi in Love and Tenchi in Love 2 also known as Tenchi Forever.
Tenchi in Love 1 is a pretty good film that explores the past of Tenchi's mother and father, while Tenchi Forever is a mature drama about what it means to love as an adult, Forever is fantastic and personally I consider it the peak of the franchise.

>Washu is no longer the mom of Ryoko, but she's the mom of the group

>Ryoko and Ayeka are more mature, which is interesting because both were the dramatic element in the OVA, while in Universe they are like two adult sisters trying to get adult

Most likely Evangelion and the conclusion of the millennium. Evangelion was a huge success in the market, which lead to the producer companies to greenlight similar projects, on the other hand that meant for artists to try a more dry and serious approuch to their own popular works. With the millennium ending and a new beginning, most people felt uncertain about the future, which is reflected through Tenchi in the film and through the scene of Ryoko flying away with Tenchi, while the small imaginary neighbourhood transforms into the city

The tv series is a fun adventure romp that reimagines the basic setup with some changes to the character backgrounds, a few new characters and a different creative vision. Some of the later movies ("In Love" and "Forever" IIRC) are set in that tv universe. My main problem with it is that for large parts, the characters are flanderized copies of their OAV selves, Mihoshi being the main victim, so I've always been more of a fan of the OAV universe.

That's my view on it as well. I enjoy it, but it doesn't quite have the same feel to it as the OAV does for me, lorewise. On that note, I'll never quite forgive Pioneer/AIC, that they held back any continuation of the OAV setting, in favor of endless spin-offs to milk the franchise dry until it was past its prime.

In my ideal timeline, the side stories that were told in the Shin Tenchi Muyo novels should have been the actual OAV3, to further flesh out the characters and setting with a better paced leadup to the finale that would have been another hypothetical OAV4. That timegap and stress to fit the remainder of the story in a single OAV series really took a toll on the series structure and pacing.

On another note, if I could get a properly animated new project, it would probably be Isekai no Seikishi 2 or maybe a (re)adaption of the GXP novels, with a director that doesn't turn the series into a farce with his brand of humor.

I'm still not sure how I feel about those vignettes about the various offspring. Unless he plans to do an actual series with them, akin to, say War on Geminar or GXP, I'm not sure I really need to know who did what with whom for generations to come. There's also the narrative problem that post OAV3 anything in the immediate vicinity of Tenchi's closest family kinda lacks stakes, with him being the god emperor of time and space, backed up by the 3 goddesses no less. Even War on Geminar, which is probably the best Kajishima related thing since OAV2, is a strange watch at times, once you keep that in mind. "No need for Tenchi" indeed.

It's a matter of budget, which Tenchi actually had back in the day when they were owned and supported by Pioneer.
Most shows would just rather spend their money on other things, though some do have varying outfits(Ruri no Houseki for instance right now), and some that don't at least have an excuse.

Tenchi Muyo in Love is such a slam dunk. It's the audience's introduction to Tenchi's mother who at that point had been built up as this perfect mother figure. There was such a an unseen mythology to her character and they had so much riding on her first appearance. The audience has to immediately fall in love with the character, almost before she even speaks.... and that is miraculously accomplished. Achika is not only the best part of TMiL, she's arguably the best character in the entire franchise.... and OVA 3 fucked it all up.

I love how she's the in-between of Ryoko and Ayeka. While she's more playful than Ayeka, she's more mellow than Ryoko.
She's a princess living a normal life, which is parallel to Tenchi's adventure
The final scene is fantastic, Nobuyuki is filming our main cast, then the audience is transported to the past, with a young Nobuyuki filming Achika, Ryoko and Ayeka, and finally both parents of Tenchi together in the middle of Sakura trees (that scene has a great callback in Tenchi Forever with Tenchi and Ryoko together at the lake)

That's Mitsuki, a character with a convoluted backstory even for Tenchi.
So, the character originates from Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure. It's another Kajishima project, kinda like if Evangelion were filtered through Tenchi Muyo.
She's the standard Tsundere, caring but stern towards the MC and her mad scientist father.
The story of Dual canonically takes place billions of years in the past before Tenchi, on a separate but very similar Earth from our Earth.
Somehow, the souls of each of the girls pictured here resonate in the Sea of Souls or something, and manifest repeatedly in GXP, and harmonize with Seina's, whose soul is similar to that of the MC of Dual.

GXP Mitsuki's father was an admirer of Kirika's mom, Tsukiko, while she was in the GP Academy.
She didn't return is affection, and this devastated him to the point that one night, in a fit of madness, he created a robot to her specifications.
In a recognized, but poorly understood phenomenon, she gained a soul and true sentience.
Recognizing that she was not just a copy of another woman but a person unto herself, the scientist resolved to raise her as his daughter instead of a sexbot.
She joined the GP Academy a year ahead of Seina, and while out on a mission was kidnapped and killed by Tyrant Shank, the leader of the most ruthless Space Pirate Guild since Ryoko roamed the stars.(He's also responsible for Mihoshi's condition, but that's another story.
Liberated from her physical form and left as something like a Ghost in the Machine, she haunted Shank's ship's computer until Seina could rescue her.
At the same time, Shank had also kidnapped Fuku, trying to unlock the fearsome mysteries of Cabbit Technology, and managed to make several imperfect clones of her, 3 of which survived.
Mitsuki's soul got transfered into one of them, and she later learned how to transform and regain her former appearance.

OAV3 really should have covered Washuu's extended backstory, before heading into the goddess war. Pity Kajishima didn't choose to do adapt the ShinTM novels when he had the budget to make OAV4 and 5. Would have helped to remedy some of OAV3's shortcomings. Could have called it OAV2.7, or somesuch.

It's interesting, or rather, peculiar how wildly the depiction of Ryoko's ears varies between artworks.

It’s a classic, I always found the main girl Sayoko to be Ryoko-esque, the art is sooo good, and the stories are very fun, the artist had to be inspired by her because I’m pretty sure he did a few tenchi-muyo doujins when he was starting out.

She almost kisses him in the Pretty Sammy music video but I think it's a separate continuity from the Pretty Sammy OVA, novels or TV anime. Somehow Tenchi is an aspiring sentai show director in the TV version and she falls in love with him almost immediately but at the end it turns out he already has someone so she ends the episode crying her eyes out without understanding why.
