Daily Detective Conan case
I'll be storytiming the manga, one complete case per day. Most cases are around 3-6 chapters long.
Feel free to drop in at any time, since it's mostly episodic.

I don't think it's so much about what's well known, but if you're a mystery writer it pays to brush up on the genre, so even if it's something that might not be huge in your country you'll seek out everything. I'm sure Aoyama was watching Castle and Bones just to get inspired.

Columbo recently had a pretty big surge in popularity here in the west - enough that inspired two copycat series (that I know of), Poker Face and Elsbeth.

Poker Face is clearly the blockbuster of the two, but I have to say Rian Johnson is exactly the sort of director you don't want trying to copy Columbo. He can't help himself, he's very masturbatory, and Columbo isn't a masturbatory series. Columbo is very sincere detective fiction. Johnson just loves his references and his stylish direction and his subversions and weird gimmicks. And most of all, he loves to shit on lower class people. He LOVES to write cases where two pieces of trailer trash try and kill each other. He's the type of guy who punches down, always. The exact opposite of Columbo, who always deals with rich, white collar criminals. That's the entire appeal, of course, the contrast between the bedraggled detective and the preening killer. Johnson can't write that kind of story, he'd always make fun of the both of them.

It's the read you're forced to get after watching two seasons of Poker Face. "Masturbatory" is exactly how I'd describe Knives Out, though, I didn't find either movie particularly good. And I genuinely think that in both cases, the rich are treated better than the poor by the narrative.

Death would definitely cause the biggest backlash, followed by something like ending up with Shiho as replacement for Elena, his first crush.
Him ending up with Azusa is softly implied, so people are kind of bracing themselves for it.
There is really no other single woman in his life, except Vermouth, who is a criminal and probably old enough to be his grandma.

I kind of regret checking through this because I loved the little surprise at the end of the volume in the threads to see who it'd be. Columbo was a nice one I wasn't expecting. Still though, tons of characters out there, and I'm genuinely curious about many of the japanese ones. The only one I knew of before this was the one in Bungo Stray Dogs, and I realize now he's the inspiration for this series with him being Edogawa.

Are translations of the Japanese authors any good? I'm not sure how prose is handled when translating to English.

I've started the anime and 26 episodes in it seems like a lot of crime in general and particularly murders occur around them, I mean it's one thing that they solve murders but to be present for a murder is something most people won't experience even once in a low crime rate country like Japan.
So I'm just saying being turned into a child is not the only thing Shinichi is cursed with.

Jeezus, imagine being a paramedic or forensic and then some little boy just waltzing in and touching a dead body.

I believe it's a thing about nippon work culture, like they would do anything but fire an employee, even give him a position with no meaningful tasks hoping he just resigns out of shameru.

love how every suspect had some kind of secret they were keeping, even if it was just unimportant nonsense like the old guy pretending to be blind. This case had a lot of moving parts, lots of fun stuff to get engaged in.

Didn't care about the case. Solves it anyway.

I don't recall the scientist guy ever showing up again. He probably got a design so there is more to see than just Agasa, not giving him an appearance or even making him a silhouette would have actually made him more suspicious than this.

I love how Viz changed the translation when Genta pretty much said nigger.
