It wasn't really because of the waifufags but rather Yoh and Shimada's original plot turned LWA into a full shoujo Anime focused on romance. They still teased it and even talk about it in the Chronicles Book. If it gets a s2 I fully expect to see them become canon since the seeds were planted in s1

Probably follow-up on some of the family-related subplots. Like Monica's adoptive mom, or Cyril's mom subplot. They largely only get mentioned tangentially but never actually show up past their one arcs, despite being pretty important supporting characters for the two. More Isabelle too.
