What a fantastic season! I'm not sure if the label 'vanilla season' make sense to anyone else, but this felt like one of the best 'vanilla' seasons of Precure. It made me realize how much threatening/interesting monsters of the week elevates a season. Even the summoning stock footage look awesomely evil, and the 'spoiled' areas the Megabyougens create are disgusting and menacing. Having the Megabyougens grow stronger over time if not dealt with lent everything a sense of urgency, and tied nicely into the themes of evolution which became more prominent as the season progressed.
One non-vanilla thing is how seriously they attacked Nodoka psychologically by Daruizen begging for help and then claiming that she's just as bad as the Byougens for not offering help. Her response toyed with my expectations of what a pink Cure should be like.

HG was definitively vanilla, almost retro, and I agree the byougens felt threatening in terms of concept (even if I don't love the villains as individuals per se), I think HG is the last season that tried to have villains be consistently imposing, so that's something.
In general I wouldn't recommend the season to newfags because you can kinda get some of the qualities that HG has in other shows, but with added stuff on top. Nodoka + Daruizen is definitively the most memorable part, Hinata was great but the landing of her character arc was wonky, Chiyu started a bit bland then I liked her episodes in the middle (with the rival) but the ending of her arc being a fence-sitter wasn't a good lesson to me, feels like they just wanted to be different from other blue Cure-type arcs but that was just a recipe for burning out. Asumi was admitedly very cute but didn't add a lot of intrigue to the show imo, I think mid-season Cures need to shake the show more than just that.

I wasn't sure what to expect when Nodoka got the choice to save Daruizen. I'm generally a big redemption fan, so my first instinct was to hope for that.
The way Daruizen is generally portrayed, he doesn't seem irredeemable, since he'd probably just be happy if he could live comfortably without causing damage. I tried to tally up his sins in my mind, and recalled him smiling and taking some sadistic pleasure in Nodoka realizing what he was. Even if he might have been redeemable, he never did anything to redeem himself, so I can live with him getting murdered.
I think Toei might have been nervous that Nodoka would appear too unsympathetic for a lead Cure, so they sprinkled in several useful flashbacks of Daruizen actually taking pleasure in tormenting others. His fate was sealed.

Oops my bad, while DP's season movie does, TR's season movie doesn't have one and I was actually thinking of HG's season movie which featured a short with the TR's in it at the end
