i am currently binging Shinobigoto from the start

I wonder if Nishi can truly deliver an interesting villain faction. This is something Hokazono is great at. He understood that you don’t need to make the villain underlings depraved. He also made them realistic and gave them a sense of evil through their backstories, like the murder of Kunishige or the war, so we don’t need to see them committing evil acts in the comic all the time. They also have relationships with each other.

For Iruma, the antagonist group is the comic's greatest weakness. Either they're sadomasochistic perverts or they're on a race superiority trip. Their relationships between each other are weak, and their wins are minimal, aside from recruiting one guy and persuading an important figurehead to be on their side. Nishi doesn't shake up the status quo much. Baal, her main villain, and Kiriwo, her main villainous rival character, are barely present.

The writer and artist of the mafia spin-off, hiroja (pic related), does a much better job with the villain characters he's given. They have already infiltrated so much of society with a child slave auction, a corrupt circus and counterfeit production. I wonder if Nishi can write villains who constantly keep the main characters guessing and not just have them appear at a village to spam some magic spells. It doesn't matter how handsome your villains are. People notice poor writing. I thought Bakugami was actually a step in the right direction, but he's already been shelved again.

Other than Kagurabachi, what are some other manga series that got good reception in the West but rather poor in Japan?

Shinobi has an awesome reverse trap character so it's a winner in my book

yeah didn't like either of those, but some of the comps and character progression (aka the force the rakugo baka to get a clue arcs) were still fun, maybe not battle shounen hype fun but the characters were generally pretty well written and they garnered real fan response.
