I'm a bit disappointed, but this time it's a bit different than usual.
From where Vamola appeared since fucking months later (her first official coloring) literally every reader had assumed that's a full body-suit since the manga is in black and white. Anime watchers understandably can't relate to that, but it was pretty unexpected since everyone now had a specific image of Vamola, her story and her suit, so most thought

which is probably true (although to be fair if everyone realized the truth from the beginning things would have been different). But obviously it's not like the readers bitched at the revelation, since that was the original design Tatsu had in mind to begin with, just a bit disappointed.
So I think that Saru tried to make a compromise between the author's intentions and the long-time readers' understanding by giving her a full body suit BUT making it skin colored in the actually bare parts.
Frankly it's not the best compromise since it makes neither side too happy, but I can see the logic and the "good will" in the change if you get what I mean, so I'm not outraged.
Hopefully it will get revealed that in the anime the skin-colored parts are retactable: that would be a compromise I like.

Reading the manga was a treat because Tatsu's art is great and you can appreciate Science Saru's additions even more. The only change I don't like by SciSar is how Okarun reaches for Momo first and she reciprocates in this scene. It starts with Okarun finding Momo right after Jiji's made fun of her and comforting her after she cries, so he's further incentivized not to make fun of her. In fact, they bond on doing poses (I added a pose that Okarun heard helped attract aliens that is also a Bloodborne reference).

It fits the anime, ScienceSaru Momo is VERY explicit about how much she loves him, manga Momo had a tiny bit of plausible deniability at that point but anime Momo is utterly hopeless. I think many small interactions, both in manga and anime show that he's mostly a timid otaku because of all the prolonged years he's been bullied or treated as an outcast.
For example, even in the Nessie arc he showed that he has a good instinct on how to deal with girls.
He's just never met the right people until high school clearly, so he ended up being an inwards outcast.

It was just him laying it clear to her that he only cares about the opinion of his friend and he doesn't want her to be upset over such a misunderstanding. From his perspective it was just him trying to reconcile with his dear friend.
He's surprisingly good at being a friend once he's stopped being instinctively avoidant.

Honestly it still feels like an open question. The cycle of the manga has almost always been:
"introduce character -> shit hits fan -> character gets power -> gang fumbles their way to victory -> dinner"
but the cast is big enough for that to be unmanageable now. It remains to be seen whether Tatsu is just introducing more power users to increase the scope of the world that the characters are dealing with, or if this marks a shift into more of an on-the-rails Soul Societyish phase.

I honestly get it, and being disappointed with anime adaptations is usually the cost of being a mangafag. But I'm a geriatric who's been reading DDD since chapter four. I thought the market would never look at this as more than a quirky side project by a more popular mangaka's long-suffering assistant, and I was dead fucking wrong. Almost every anime episode has made full use of the medium to enhance the source material, rather than just going through the motions or getting lost in some faggot auteur's misinterpretation of the word "cinematic." Science Saru shows are now "at least watch the first episode" tier for me specifically because of what they've done with the manga.

To be fair the Okamomo is one of the best selling point of the series, you don't usually get such an entertaining main romance in shounen. And frankly that's a good thing, because it helps catch the viewer by surprise when the story suddenly pulls up some consistency twist that was hidden in plain sight by the cutesy part.

All of the characters have idealistic traits (and that's fine, who cares about reality), but I think Okaruns most understated one is how faithful his heart is to Momo from the very beginning, considering they're not even in a relationship yet.
Yes, once in a while there's some casual blushing when some other girls push themselves on him (like straight up forcing a kiss) just to make it a bit more believable, but despite that for being a shy hormonal teenage boy he's still incredibly stoic and unwavering about his romantic pursue.
Maybe the fact that technically he didn't yet have all of his balls back then helps make it believable.
