When Toriyama died he got tons of official tributes. When Takeshi died they didn’t even mention it in the author comments.

I guess it just wasn't in the cards for him.

Toriyama is just plain and simple just more influential and overall more important to the manga industry.

sadly you can't compare the legacy of toriyama with kaz, toriyama series existed way longer than kaz's but also his impact in pop culture stays strong to this day, yugioh on the other hand is quite niche while it helped boom the interest of TCG it only holds itself thanks to that hobby rather than being its own universe.

No disrespect to the man, but the real reason behind Yugioh's success if Konami.
The man had the concept but Konami came up with the proper rules. Dude was set for life with all the royalties.
To his credit his monster designs are excellent though.

Because nobody in the West read the manga so they don't know anything about the person responsible for creating the series. As far as they know, Konami are the ones responsible for it.

I didn't enter this thread thinking that by the time i exist it I'll believe that the guy who created Yu-gi-oh was killed by the United States government, and yet now i do.

I remember almost getting carried out to sea in the water for going too far out as a child and had to find out the hard way how to get out of it. You don’t fuck with the ocean without the necessary preparations. Let the professionals handle it if someone’s drowning it’s not your job to be a hero.

Konami was producing extremely popular video games for the franchise long before they made the physical TCG, and the anime itself never took off until studio gallop made it under Konami's new marketting push and TCG after Bandai and Toei failed with their first attempt.

"Official" tributes are just advertisements. A lot of people involved in DB wanted more tributes because they wanted exposure, apparently Toriyama's closest relatives did not want any of that so Shueisha in fact did not do any official tribute.
