As much as I enjoy Frieren, the setting itself is absolutely not something to get invested in, all these quasi-dnd fantasy worlds are just poorly written. I know it's a cardinal sin to compare every piece of fictional fantasy setting media to Lord of the Rings but every one wants to build off of Tolkien's elves without even approaching the level of attention that made them what they are. It is unfair of me to bring that up regarding Frieren as it really is just about characters rather then nations and history.

I'm personally not too bothered that the author hasn't put that much attention into all of the details like Tolkien did for his world, but that's because the setting is just a stage for the author to explore the themes/characters he wants to. Basically no one is into the series for its worldbuilding, the fatansy atmosphere exists because its both familiar and cozy, not because the author wants to the world to stand on its own two feet (which is why he's mixing various pieces of european history for the language and culture and the continent resembles Great Britain).

I maintain that where the story is going with demons is that at some point their increasing mimicry of humans will cause newly born demons that are so good at copying humanity that they actually *do* understand right and wrong. Biologically being demons, but capable of understanding human concepts that their predecessors couldn't, and as a result being capable of functioning in human society as something other than predators because they understand what ethics are now.

The conflict will then become a personal one where we have a young demon that is 'confirmed good', but Frieren being unable to accept its existence because she expects it to be a trick. Her hatred and distrust of demons, being unambiguously correct for a thousand years, is now put up against a case where she is in the wrong because her ancient enemy has grown and she hasn't.

Retconning them into never having been evil in the first place would be boring and the conflict that arises from knowing they are changing and that there can be good demons with which humans could coexist after having the belief they are completely unredeemable so ingrained, not just in Frieren, but even the audience, would be interesting. You can watch anime on almost anything these days. Magus Bride, for example, is on both Netflix and Amazon Prime despite neither being a dedicated anime platform.

You only need to dig deeper into platforms like Crunchroll or other streaming sites with a stronger anime focus if you are looking for something that is either too old to be carried by a modern platform or a niche seasonal anime that the larger platforms didn't bother to pick up. To be fair, Sauron is a fallen angel and Morgoth is literally a fucking god who in his prime was able to play tug-of-war with the laws of creation and permanently reshape the metaphysics of the world. He got weaker over time, but he was still god-tier.

Sauron vs Frieren is... difficult to parse. We don't actually know much about how Sauron fights 1v1 aside from shapeshifting. Post-Ring Sauron would be something that Frieren cannot kill outright, but might be able to best in battle.

The real funny thing would be to see Frieren corrupted by the temptations of the Ring.

Yeah, mythological elves were basically human sized fairies with magic and powers of invisibility (rather than hiding due to their small size) that played pranks or caused curses/diseases on humans.

In early modern pre-Tolkie literature they were mostly conflated with fairies even in the reduced size.

The concept of Elves as this human-like but long lived race, that in some aspects might seem magical but not to the point freely controlling magic and curses like in old myths, is taken directly from Tolkien's elves.

You're right, after episode 16 the series declined a bit due to the Magic Certification story arc. This is the part I like the least because it ends up becoming a run of the mill shounen. It reminds me of the Chunin exams in Naruto, where they introduced a bunch of quirky and unique characters that I don't really care about because I've seen this trope ad nauseam. Most people recommend the series because they finished the Demon's Arc and decided this anime deserves a chance. In my opinion, they're going to drag this anime out and fill it with fan service for the next 10 years. It would be a shame if the next season turned into a romantic comedy about the relationship between Fern and Stark. Or worse, just a bunch of flashbacks one after another about how gigachad Himmel was and how wet frieren's panties are because of that.

I like run of the mill shounen so the certification arc was nice.

I had a funny idea for a doujin about an OC demon that was secrelty smuggled into human lands during the demon wars to speak with a mafia in one of the major human cities in order to establish a foothold in the backlines. The problem being that by the time the demon got to the mafia, the demon king was already defeated. She ended up being shanghaied into working for the don, who is also a really tough mage, and as a bonus was kept in line by the mafia's enforcer/corpse-cleaner, an 8-foot tall cannibal serial-killer who likes to use her as a chew-toy (she's durable, she regenerates the limbs he rips off). The idea is that the demon is in the pecarious situation where she is kept under the thumb of humans who are just as bad as demons -- the don is more magically-powerful, and instinct drives her to obey him, and the serial-killer who is a less subtle relfection of her monsterous nature. While she is allowed to pretend to be human, killing rival gangs with the don's permission, she begins resenting the power-dynamic that demonkind present over humans, even if she doesn't immediately realize that's what that is. She ends up emotionally attached to a group of civillians she got to know in her time-off (she thinks she's being manipulative and clever), only for the mafia to kill them to make it clear that the demon is their property and isn't allowed to do anything without the don's permission. Around this time, she comes to grips with how she, either through evolution, mutation, or repeated traumatic-brain injuries, has developed human emotions.
Then she makes a plot to betray the mafia and gets revenge against the serial-killer for eating her friends, and then fucks off into the woods to become a lady-of-the-lake type figure.

The comparisons I see mostly are about them using words just to deceive people, looking like people, but being completely different from them and (maybe) comparing eating humans to blood libel. We just didn't focus on them, we focused on the ones that would survive.

In the second test, killing each other would have been picking a useless fight at the start with no benefit since it wasn't a competition, and once they knew what was going on fighting each other would have been SUPER stupid.

Third test there was no opportunity to kill each other.

So the only test were fights could have happened, they did happen. At least 5 people would be outright dead if Frieren and Fern were not actively avoiding that outcome (Frieren could have killed Denken, Fern could have killed Ehre and her lying about killing Ehre saved Ubel, and Frieren bringing down the barrier kept the two other girls on her team from getting murdered)

Whilst I think if there is going to be a romance plot it would be with a revived Himmel or soul companion thing going on I just don't see that happening given it would ruin the whole point about lost time and being thankful for the present. Having Kraft or some other elf be a partner to Frieren would also really make Himmel inconsequential. Personally I blame Himmel for them not getting together, he should never have parted with her. If Frieren realises she was not romantically attached to Himmel then that would be fine in my view even if it would be kind of a weird story arc. Frieren being an immortal femcel would be in character.

Tolkien popularized and codified what constituted an "Elf" in modern fantasy and I can guarantee you that the vast majority of Japanese media do not look to the etymology of Anglo-Saxon names like Alfred to base their cute long eared girls on. Also that is a contentious point regarding fae folk and Elves, are we basing this purely on Norse and Germanic legends? Is Albion to be considered? What about the Irish Tuatha Dé Danann? The Wild Hunt? You cannot simply separate them neatly between Elves and Fae.
