mostly likely, you're losing the original composition and visual hierarchy when you're cleaning up your rough drafts or changing things from a reference image. If you're going to change things, you need to balance how the eyes flow through the image, if you'r ading details, they might come off as too strong and steal the viewer's gaze or disrupt the flow of the composition. Try to find a way to draw those details so that they stand out less, maybe tone down the value contrast, use more simplified shapes, or make the linework thinner or less opaque. If it doesn't work, then maybe that composition just doesn't work with those details so you have to adjust the entire composition
