There are so many similarities between them. The gold joints, the new plider is a combination between the OG plider and the kaiser plider, the limbs are a lot longer, the full black color scheme,the chest is way wider, the "new" rocket punch has "fins/spikes" sticking out on the sides(just like kaiser), the new rust hurricane looks similar to rust tornado, and the new scrander has the same extra set of wings.

I have it and like it, you need to buy a metallic red marker or paint for the red bits on the face. Pour-type markers can crack plastic if they get in between parts, so use markers before assembly. It also comes with a shitton of extra parts, so you can give Z black limbs minus the hands. Zero's the most posable, Jeeg's legs aren't, Grendizer and Getter are based on the pretty posable Z, Kaiser's based on Great and they very mournfully have the least amount of posability. The colour separation explains the price for Grendizer and Jeeg (which often goes on sale), and the Getter Arc one has a habit of breaking apparently. I have Z, Great, Grendizer, Jeeg, and Zero if there's anything else. A Moderoid option exists for Zero as well, Moderoid kits feel sturdier and sometimes have pre-painted parts but I don't know how Zero is because I already got the HG one. I also metallic-red markered the big Zero Scrander and I think it looks nicer.

Minerva and Lorelai/Danube aside, Satan Claus P10 and Genova M9 were pretty memorable, and you can't really hate Doublas and Garada. Ghostfire and Taurus come to mind for whatever reason as well, and the impostor limb-reassembling one too. I think Shin Mazinger picked a lot of the good ones, but sadly not the two I initially mentioned.

It might be seen as more vanilla compared to some of the more bizarre stuff later on (that I can't think of) but it definitely at least merits a mention by people, you're right.
Apparently the combining robot stuff came into being from a discussion between Ishikawa, Toei's producer, and Dynamic Pro's president (and Go Nagai's brother), >wikipedia also notes that Go Nagai was initially confused but helped with the designs for Getter-2 and 3. Although a source better than wikipedia would be something lovely. I do love Jeeg but it's also ugly and weird (and the Infinitism kit is not very poseable), and I don't think I've heard Jeeg get praised. But the same can probably be said about Gaiking and Gaiking is a friend.
And I get what you mean about the Shin one feeling like a DJW-esque design. Something about the lines or colours? That and something inherent in the eyes.

Nothing manga Getter related is in SRWZ1 at all. They don't even throw in Shin Getter. It adapts Toei Getter G's tv show and that's it.

Y is the one that adapts Getter Arc, which is a sequel to the Shin Getter and Go manga.

Some other older games throw in Shin Getter from the manga in as an upgrade for the Toei crew, but that's not even the case in Z1.

It's a spin-off but it's also directly tied to the original continuity... but at the same time it isn't (and obviously since it's from another author you can just disregard it all).

Basically, according to Devolution, (this is actually a fairly late reveal) everything after Getter G was just one among many computer simulations of the future Saotome prepared after having visions of the Getter Emperor and obtaining a fragment of it. Using this knowledge, they avoid all the events from Shin and Go. But then someone else different from the Andromeda Stelleration comes from the future to stop them from messing with time...)

Note the first half of Devolution's plot takes place within another one of these simulations, but this one was meant to make the Emperor fragment "grow" into a Getter of its own in order to eventually face the "true enemy" in the real world.
