Bad voice direction, amateur voice actors + having to match their dialogue with the animation (whereas for Western cartoons the voice lines are recorded way before the animation is finalized, giving the VAs a lot more freedom and range)

ok, i'll bite. which language are we talking about? Because, like I said, most US based dubs suck. yeah, there are ones made by professional A- grade actors, but the vast majority are done by your dime-a-dozen actors that have sub-par performances.
There are languages like spanish, specifically LatAm spanish where many dubs are made by professional a-grade voice actors. These actors do not only anime, but series, dramas, movies, etc. The lower quality ones are made by dub studios that do jobs on the cheap, like some from venezuelan and chilean studios.
I had heard some Spain spanish (yeah there are differences) some are good (like Tokyo Godfathers) and others are MEH. So maybe there are other languages and countries with long dub traditions and seasoned veteran actors, I dare guessing maybe French and German are among such cases.

I'll always watch Candy and Digimon in their latinamerican dub, because that's how I watched it as a child and loved them that way, just as the Latino dub of the movie Armageddon.
Then, I watched Sonic X, Gravity Falls, cowboy bebop, den noh coil, made in abyss in their original languages. Would never watch the dubs as long as I can because I don't care or need them.
The only dub that is worth something is the latinamerican dub for The Loud House. Amazing work there that makes me laugh, but still, will never be as good as the original English.
If you say a dub is better than the original, you're watching a different show/movie made by your regional dubbing team which tried to "improve" the raw material, and nobody asked for that.
Personally, if it's an anime I really care about or it is set in actual Japan, I couldn't watch it in any other language than japanese. It's not just about getting the experience of watching anime in Japanese, it's that I want also the whole package of what is being communicated, and that includes the language AND the original voice acting.
Nobody watches in Japanese to feel they become more japanese because it won't happen, and if it actually worked I'd be the first one doing it. I watch it in Japanese because I'm very fond of anime and Japanese culture, and that is what I want to get when watching anime.
People who claim they watch in their own language because they can't stand getting distracted by subtitles and that they want to witness and enjoy all the visual elements give up a big part of the audio visual work just to satisfy their visual preferences. I don't know about the rest, but I am very able to to appreciate and enjoy both the visuals and the language and cultural elements when watching subbed anime. And I'll always prefer the original.

I think it really depends of the quality of dubs.If you told me to choose between Ghost Stories subbed or dubbed, we all know which choice is better.

Nowadays the few anime i watch, i prefer to watch them with original jap audio either because there is NO dubs available in my language, or because said dubs are complete shit. I think the last show i actually watched dubbed was FMA:B, and even with some minor mistakes now and then it was good. Later i tried to watch dubbed Mob Psycho 100 and Kengan Ashura, and holy fuck that was a mistake
I will probably sound like a nostalgiafag, but older dubs were better, more acting quality and voice modulation all around, even if sometimes you could face one or other dialogue change

It depends on the anime and the adaptation. In Italy, Sailor Moon from the '90s is very well dubbed, but the adaptation is heavily censored, so I prefer the original, while Death Note is both very well adapted and well dubbed, so I don't mind seeing it in Italian.

The Animax dub of Sakura was faithful to the original and still bad. Similar with the newer Viz dub of Sailor Moon where the voice acting completely pales in comparison to the older DiC dub nevermind the original Jap audio; the new dub flopped on Toonami earlier this year because it's so mediocre (they should have at least got some of the older actors back).
Of the English redubbed anime I've heard, Saint Seiya is the only one that I would say is an uncompromised upgrade over its previous dubs.
