I feel like this is why the current arc is really pushing things ahead. While it looks as though they might get pulled out and not go to the human world, just coming this far is going to change things. Quite a bit. Mephisto probably didn't know Iruma was a human before, but I think he knows now. He knows something the rest of us don't, at least.

Taken negatively, it might make the current arc seem like a desperate gambit to build some hype around the series again when it's fallen off somewhat, but on the other hand Nishi might have decided to push things into the next stage in an abrupt manner rather than fall into a rut.

Nishi toyed around with the idea early on, but seems to have Clara playing more of a big sis/bestie role and maybe hook her up with Asmo instead. We're well past the point where even the harem allegations have any serious weight.

Ameri beat the odds, in more senses than you might expect. She wasn't the first, or even second female character Iruma made any kind of connection with, she doesn't have some childhood friend trope to lean on, she's stronger than him, she's older than him, she's taller than him, she's not very feminine (all of these are big turnoffs in general, and particularly in Japan), plus her ambition and social status could even make her a rival for the throne.

She was poised to fail in pretty much every regard, but seems to have pulled off the win anyway. I suppose Eiko should have been the early warning that Iruma wasn't going to follow the classical tropes, or else she'd be a part of the main cast, if not the romantic lead.
