How do you anons feel about western stuff (from books to videogames and others) getting adapted to anime?
What are your favorites if any?

I really want a Malazan anime. Fuck, adapting a bunch of western literature would be awesome to see.
My favorite adaptations of western stuff are Gankutsuou, Cyberpunk Edgerunners and The Animatrix.

Imagine the authors of children's fantasy greenlighting an anime adaptation of their work, then proceeding to reel in horror at the existence of the doujin industry. They would witness with their own eyes explicit images of their barely-pubescent characters getting railed in every hole. I'd love to be a fly on that wall.

Wasn't one fantasy novel getting an anime adaptation for this or next season? I just can't remember the name right now

It’s better than the Japanese original stuff since then you can guarantee there won’t be any weird pedo or incest shit in it.

Anne of Green Gables was first adapted to anime in 1979. This isn't a new trend, underage.

This isn't even a matter of being underage, it's just a matter of being informed. Anne was one of the first English language novels translated into Japanese after the war, and multiple generations of children grew up reading it. There used to be a "Canadian World" theme park in Ashibetsu, Hokkaido, with a replica of the Green Gables home and park staff would cosplay as Anne and Gilbert. Excerpts from the books and from scripts for adaptations are used in English textbooks and exams. Canada has hundreds of thousands of Japanese tourists every year, and Prince Edward Island in particular really relies on travelers from Japan to prop up its economy. Couples fly to PEI to get married.
Couples.
From Japan.
Fly to Prince Edward Island
(halfway around the world)
To get married.
I can't actually think of a fitting analogy for an English country. There isn't any one book that's as pervasive and enduring. Maybe Harry Potter, but even that's died out and Anne is still popular 130 years after it was first published.
Anne is also the reason you have red-haired tsunderes as well as Studio Ghibli.

I'm happy, as long as it's /tv/, like Animatrix. Nothing good comes out of basing your story on some mediocre Pedowood blockbuster.

I read it and still liked the film much more. Donated the book to a charity shop afterwards kek.

I think Takarajima is one of the best adaptations of Treasure Island period. Dezaki understood Silver's character from the book better than what I've seen come out of Hollywood.

I think there are specific things that work well in anime format and that is the proper way to adapt them. It doesn't fit everything, but if you want to emphasize either charm or fantastical action anime does that easier than live action does. Some things won't translate to anime well, but just in the same way that they don't translate to film well. Though, interestingly, a lot of the things that don't translate to film fail because the book they were based on relied heavily on narration and internal monologue, which general gets lost in film, but such a story COULD theoretically get adapted to manga successfully.

In terms of western properties getting an anime adaptation... I think that Mistborn would honestly make for a fantastic anime. The high-energy metalpushing fights would fit right into shonen battle framing with minimal effort, and thats a visual fight language that live action just doesn't have.

I also personally think it would *hilarious* to adapt wheel of time and just make is straight-up a battle harem anime.

I'm currently watching this. It's really good. Has a slow start, but everything after they get on the ship has been gold. There are some standard weird Dezaki adaptation decisions, and some things he was still ironing out as a director, but it perfectly captures the spirit of the book. A boy's show, and I mean that in the best way possible.

A lot of those were either too long or too depressing for children.
Imagine adapting War and Peace or Anna Karenina, even with the old 50-56 episode format you'd still have to cut a shitload of stuff, imagine how many changes they'd have to make about something like Madame Bovary to not traumatize japanese kids.

Maybe for modern shit, old anime might have taken some liberties in making some things less violent or change a couple of story bits, or just not adapting entire books, but they were hardly lame

that's very true, production teams had more creative freedom but i think a bit part is also that there was a different mindset then vs now. Partly I assume because they consumed higher quality media to get the creative juices flowing and had longer attention spans for layered humor and thought inspiring scenes. not everything is gold obviously but less shit in means less shit out.
