Im still pissed we never got S2. In terms of designs and story, this was the perfect mazinger reboot. Everything was tied together so nicely. The Ashura/Hell plot twist was so fucking cool. Kenzo too. Even the small changes made the story sooo much better. The animation was amazing too.
I dont think any new reboot could outdo the story shin had. Its such a shame we are probably never going to get another mazinger reboot (or at least for a long time, and it wont be on the same level since U flopped)

Kouji was cool, but nothing that special aside from having some fancy attack cries.

I don't think we'll ever see a take on Ashura as good as Shin Mazinger's again, but that's the only point where I think it really can't be surpassed.

It was fairly static a lot of the time. That said, for something like Mazinger or Getter, that's still much better than low budget CG since you can still do a lot of stylization if the director is good, and Shin Mazinger does just that.

Actually I'm not sure about anime. Steins Gate VN and Madoka both came out after Shin Mazinger Zero (although Steins Gate VN just a few months after Shin Mazinger Zero's first chapter so it's just a coincidence).

I guess there's Higurashi where Rika goes between countless parallel worlds to save herself and her friends? No specific person she was attempting to save though. But, thinking about it, it feels like if there's any inspiration for the time traveling aspect, it must be Higurashi. It even uses the same set up here where each timeline has differences by default, not just as a result of the traveler's actions, unlike in most time traveling stories (since Higurashi although generally regarded as a time loop is actually about parallel worlds when the mechanics are explained).

I don't know that I'd say it failed but it did under utilize them a good bit. A big complaint at the time was the over focus on the Kurrogane Five which is fair. Borot only showed up at the very end.

Higurashi's one of the BIG VNs, from what I've picked up, so it's always been on my backlog. Don't know whether it or Umineko was made first, though.

The show felt like it was victim to the usual modern mecha problems of extreme economization. When episode 6 consists of one half downtime, and the other half Toei-level padding of recycled footage from the previous episode, there had to be some kind of collapse or manpower shortage behind the scenes. Then it goes and covers Lorelei by taking 3 whole episodes to tell what Z from the 70s managed to do in one. Also the last couple episodes were about 80% reused footage from the very first episode, and there were at least 2 episodes that were 90% clip show and 10% wheel-spinning exchanges. I have no idea why they decided to waste all the downtime on the Violence Jack cast instead of the actual cast of the title show.
But those first few episodes were some really great over-the-top shonen, and Baron Ashura steals the whole show with his/her storyline. It's a shame the show couldn't get renewed.

There's an issue with bans; those are ISP related bans, your IP 4chen sees is the same as the one banned because some ISP fuckery. In my case, I change IP connection to, let's say wifi from smartphone, of a different ISP and no problem shitposting once again.
