Anyone who played Twilight princess knows that Link's love interest was ilia and not midna. Ilia was the village girl that inhabited the wasteland Link has to abandon for his adventure. Midna was the traveling companion that accompanied him on his journey so she's the obvious upgrade. After the conclusion of the journey and Link's development and maturation of course he can't go back to the small-village girl. Link's journey is never about just returning home it's always about getting away from the isolation that defines his life at the start of the game.

We see Midna and Link together for the entire game while Ilia’s entire deal happens before and after the game. The camera centers around the two of them as they fight together, change together, and succeed together. If Ilia was meant to be a romantic interest, she would probably have to pull her weight in the narrative and stay in focus throughout the game.

Since no one seems to want to actually answer, I'll explain.
Midna and Link are together the entire game. We see their arcs and struggles and the two are always together.
In contrast, Ilia is a symbol for Link's normal life outside of his duties as the hero who is seen only at specific times in the story. The two of them would absolutely have been married and lived regular lives if they weren't destined for adventure (and they probably do all that afterwards anyway)
Compare both girls' biggest moments, Midna's Lament and Ilia's memories being restored. The former being heart-rending and stressful, while the latter is a series of breadcrumb trails that aren't very involving.
Honestly it comes down to simple screen time. We're with the interesting imp girl the entire game, while we only see the cute, normal girl a few times through the playtime. It's only natural for people to latch on to a major character more than a minor character
