I guess I agree, that these shows are not as deep as something you would read in a literature class. But they definitely are deeper than most TV shows and modern animanga. And also what counts as "depth", is it how hard a piece of work is to understand or is it the depth of the subject matter that the piece is talking about itself. Because honestly things like Shakespeare's Hamlet have pretty overrated depth. I feel like most of Shakespeare's depth comes from it being old english that is refused to be translated rather than it actually being deep. When you examine it on the depth of its content rather than its vocabulary. It is honestly not that deep.

Bro Shounen is better escapism than Isekai, Shounen actually makes you feel like you can get up and improve your life. Isekai is such obvious wish fulfillment that it is just complete cringe. Like MC just gets everything they want while never needing to address the pitfalls of their previous/real life making nothing ever feel actually earned. But I guess I do agree that there always was wish-fulfillment slop, its just the deep shows back then are the ones being remembered and appreciated now. There are probably like a handful of deep shows being made now that will be appreciated in like 10 years.
