What should the criteria be for what kind of fish they partially become/what color of tail women grow as they’re turned into mermaids?

Would it be a fish native to where they were born? Native to where they currently live or are located? Fish they’re eaten? Color just as simple as the color of whatever below-the-waist clothing they were wearing when they were transformed?

There's a species of fish out there whose eyes are actually divided into separate halves so that it can look above and below the surface at the same time - for prey insects above and danger below.

It could also be they have separate pairs of eyes for different levels of light.

There's lots of ways you can swing it and I'm glad to see someone experimenting a little instead of just "put female-hotbody on fish-tail."
