Cloth-backed is just the exterior of an otherwise normal disposable diaper. Not actual cloth, but a sort of fabric-y plastic I think. E.g. goodnites are cloth-backed.
It changes the feeling of it, and affects things like noise. Probably a bit more practical if you were trying to stealth-wear in public or live somewhere hot, so it'll be a bit less clammy.

Actual cloth diapers are the thing where you have layers of cloth held inside some kind of diaper cover (and usually PVC pants on top of that to further prevent leaks), and you take them out and wash them.
