In the West, Christianity has had unambiguous moral teachings towards sex and marriage. Namely, that extramarital sex is wrong. And that's the standard I'm talking about when I mention sexual liberalism.
Obviously, that standard was far from a constant practice in historical societies,. If it were simple and natural, there wouldn't be rules to maintain it. Societal permissiveness isn't something unique to the modern day.
