Should they be trusted? Do they recommend unnecessary treatment? Are they lying when they say you have cavities?

Most of them will try to scam you in one way or another. They make money off of treatments, not from being honest. And they profit from the patient's ignorance.

Real but they'll overcorrect. You'll be fine with one or two cavities and you don't need to be 100% plaque free or however much floss you're supposed to use

it's easy to tell, just see if they push a treatment or not and if they'll still see you

I've had a canine failing (slowly) for 4 or 5 years now but my brushing/flossing/mouth washing is immaculate so he's never said anything but "that's gonna need a crown some day"

good dentists will be frank about what's a short/medium/long term problem

A lot of dentists are scammers, but there are honest ones too. I have very good dental insurance but also very healthy teeth, and my dentist has never recommended anything beyond the normal cleaning + xray.

Just like any business, they try to upsell.
>worked in sneaker store, point was to sell sneakers and then add shoe cleaners or socks or laces at the register
>worked in sandwich shop, point was to sell sandwich and then offer chips or drink or cookies
>visit a car wash, while I’m getting my car washed they offer scents or car bumper stickers or whatever

Every business there to make money. Can’t blame dentists for treating one thing, then saying “hey it looks like you need work on this too”

>Do they recommend unnecessary treatment?
All the time. The best analogy I can use is let's say you have a bumper with a tiny dent in it. Some dentists will say that you need to replace the entire bumper but that's really not true. The truth is with proper hygiene it takes years for cavities to progress to the point that they need treatment. If they haven't made it into the dentin then you don't need to do anything about them yet. To uphold the analogy, you don't need to wait until the bumper is literally falling off but you also don't need to replace the bumper because it has hail damage or a tiny little dent.

I had one dentist tell me I have 4 cavities and I went to another one and they said I have zero. My teeth never hurt. I did nothing and several years later nothing happened.

>I had one dentist tell me I have 4 cavities and I went to another one and they said I have zero.
The first dentist was telling the truth however like I said you don't have to do anything about cavities until they've reached the dentin. I've had cavities for about 7 years and now it's finally time to do something about them. I need to get fillings. If I wait another year they're going to turn into root canals (because dentin is much softer than enamel and therefore the cavities will progress much quicker once they've reached the dentin) so now is the time to get them filled, not 7 years ago when they were nothing but a bit of discoloration on my enamel. All dentists know this and the ones that recommend you get fillings so early on are basically scam artists.

It's literally in the name. Why do you think dentists are called dentists? Because they do fillings once the cavities have reached the dentin. You don't need to fill a cavity that hasn't even gone past the enamel.

Optometrists are even worse. At least dentists are the expert on tooth. The former larps as an eye doctor when Ophthalmologist exists.

Idiotic. If you're taking more K2 and D3 than you need, you're just going to piss it out anyways. If you're deficient, you're going to have a lot of problems other than tooth decay. Also, D3 is toxic in really high doses.

Because dentists know jack shit about nutrition, and don’t treat or heal their patients, they are just plastic surgeons.

>If you're taking more K2 and D3 than you need, you're just going to piss it out anyways.
You're retarded. Vitamin K and D are fat soluble. You don't piss them out, they end up stored in your tissue to be released later as needed by the body. This is why taking too much of the fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) is dangerous unless you have a severe deficiency (rare in first world countries). The American diet is terrible, but all the nasty chemically filled slop that Americans eat is "fortified" (meaning they add a bunch of vitamins to it. because the food itself has no nutritional value). They're legally required to do this but they're careful how much vitamin A, D, E, and K is artificially injected into food because it can build up in the body and cause illness if you ingest too much. That's why severe deficiency of these vitamins is rare, but mild deficiency is common. People who don't take care of their teeth eat nothing but junk food and are entirely dependent on these fortified foods as their only source of vitamins, which is why people with tooth decay typically have mild vitamin deficiency. That doesn't mean that you can "fix" tooth decay by taking a shitload of these vitamins.

Mostly so. Do everything less often than they say, at least. I wish I never met one. I’d be better off.
