hook up culture is to have fun bro, a lot of people come into it with the hope to find that special someone eventually but they know it's a slim chance, you gotta be prepared for that, like going to a flea market with the intention of getting a genuine expensive heirloom
could it happen? yeah probably, but there is a very small chance.
if you don't go with the mentality of having fun and enjoying the moment you're doing it wrong.
but yeah, most people that are in the hook up culture have had previous relationships, it might be draining to come into this without ever experiencing true love before, because as you say they still fall in love very easily and foolishly, like teenagers, over random stuff like a good kiss or a nice afternoon together
as you age even if you don't ever hook up with anyone you realize those dumb reasons to fall in love are very superficial and not long lasting at all.
