They rewire your brain so you can’t stop taking them. They can take years to quit. If you ever want to get off them, the withdrawal will be 100x worse than your original depression.
They shrink the area of the brain involved with impulse control. They made me an addict and destroyed my memory completely. My life feels like a blank slate. They erased my entire identity.
I tried to quit mine cold turkey and got brain damage.

I've literally never encountered a doctor or mental health professional who said benzos were healthy or for anything other than temporary treatment of cancer pain or extreme panic attacks

Absolutely this. I took them for a few years just to force myself not to lose a high paying job. I'm glad I'm off them now and I still managed to keep my job. They stopped me from wanting to kill myself but also stopped me from feeling emotions, bring creative, having fulfilling relationships, basically everything that made me human.
