Lately I have been drinking more than usual but I think it's justified because it's summer and it's extra relaxing to have a drink after work. I used to limit myself to just 1 wine bottle per week because that's what my mum would get me but now I have my own place and a job so I can afford to drink as much as I want without my parents knowing about it and well I really enjoy drinking. The max I ever drink at one time is equivalent to one bottle of wine or 2L of beer but I am a larger guy and I just drink that much to maintain the pleasant drunk feeling for a few hours rather than to get wasted. Lately I think I've averaged more days per week where I had some sort of alcohol than not having any and today I had a 500ml bottle of ale in the afternoon and I would've had at least half a bottle of wine in the evening but the stores were closed. Man I wanted that wine so bad after working all day...

close enough to alcoholism that you should find something better to do with your time

That's sort of the problem. I have my fav games, films and music but I've played/watched/listened to them so much I don't have anything fun left to do. All I do now is watch True crime cases on youtube. That and porn.

Unironically, you became an alcoholic at the point where you needed to limit how much you were drinking.

performing said activity alone is not valid criteria to indicate addiction. do you masturbate with anyone else?

Alcoholism is NOT a matter of quantity but of dependence. Do you ever "need" a drink? Is drinking an automatic part of any night out or party? Can you have as much fun sober as drunk? Do you get cranky or depressed if you don't get a drink? Do you find sober people annoying?

No, having to consume calories to maintain bodily functions is not a food addiction.
You have to go back

At what point?
>if you drink regularly/daily
>if you keep a stash of alcohol
>you drink by yourself
>if you lie about your drinking to others
>if you go out of your way to purchase alcohol
From how you describe it, you're in an early stage of alcoholism. If i were you I'd quit.

If you find yourself thinking like this, you're at least in the danger zone. Personally, as soon as I start craving alcohol, I cut it off completely. And I never drink alone, only socially. Drinking alone is extremely dangerous. I recommend you cut it off now before it gets any worse.

Food isn't the same as alcohol and you know it.
>when you start showing up drunk to work or missing work or other obligations altogether because of you're crippling hangover, that's when you know you have a problem.
That's when your problem gets out of hand, not when it starts.

The problem is im not social at all so if I never drank alone I'd go years without drinking, only drinking a small amount when I visit my parents lol. I sorta understand the theory that drinking alone is bad but well I really enjoy drinking and I can't just tell myself I'll only drink when I have company because I know I won't have company for 10 months plus at a time.

I think if I followed that rule I'd just date a really ugly girl from a dating app so I could have an excuse that technically i'm not drinking alone lol

There is no simple definition of an alcoholic, so asking when you become one is the wrong question. Some more helpful questions:

What is a healthy amount of alcohol to drink? According to current advice, no more than 14 units a week, spread out over at least three days (so no more than 4 units on any one day). A unit is 10ml of pure alcohol, so a 1 litre bottle of wine which is 14% alcohol is 14 units. (Some wine is stronger than that).

How much alcohol absolutely guarantees that you will become a full-blown alcoholic of the kind who gets the shakes and hallucinates when he tries to stop? About 70 units a week for a woman or 100 for a man. So, a bottle of wine a day every day, for example.

If your consumption is somewhere between those two extremes, then what you need to do is ask yourself: do you drink because you enjoy it, or because you need to? If drinking makes you happy, that may be okay; if not drinking makes you sad, then you have a serious problem.

>Man I wanted that wine so bad after working all day...
This suggests you have a serious problem.

It's okay I had a bottle of wine tonight , I should be able to last a couple more days without drinking now I think/hope especially since I don't have work booked until thursday. I don't 'need to' drink, it's more because I enjoy it like watching a film is nice but watching a film while drinking a bottle of wine is like 10 times better for example

>It's okay I had a bottle of wine tonight
Drinking an entire bottle of wine in one night is NOT okay.

>I should be able to last a couple more days without drinking now
This indicates that you not only have a drinking problem but a serious drinking problem. If you can't "last" more than a couple of days without alcohol then you clearly NEED to drink, despite your claims to the contrary, and that means you have a problem.

I'm sorry, anon, but you need to face facts here: you need to stop drinking, you need to stop COMPLETELY, you need to stop FOREVER, and you need to stop TODAY. Someone like yourself will almost never be able to drink moderately again.

Now, perhaps I'm wrong. If you go back down to one bottle of wine a week, and you drink no more than a third of a bottle in any one day, and you are HAPPY doing that, for a period of a year or more, then you have nothing to worry about. If you can't do that then you have a problem and you need to quit.

>will almost never be able to drink moderately again
That should read "will almost certainly never be able to drink moderately again".
