I am moving out of my parents house for the first time in my life. I would like to furniture the living room with a big chill couch, small couch table and a wooden board with a music system instead of a TV, so if a girl comes over we can chill on the couch, talk and listen to music.
Now my question. Should I invest in an expensive HiFi system, like 3-4K or is a budget system sufficient, like 2K?

You can use a shitty $50 Bluetooth speaker.

why have only one system? you can put one in every room, e.g. a quality mini system in the bathroom to drown out them noises, one in the kitchen to mask the screams of the animals you will butcher there, one in the barn to get the pigs in the right mood, sort of like that, you get the point?

which is that if O.P. is fantasizing about having a girl over i can fantasize about audio gear

O.P., any horse you get to ride won't care if you have a fancy audio rig or a tiny weiner or whatever.

Yes. Make sure it has a good bass, especially if you're moving into an apartment.

Chances that are that above 2K you'll improve the sound quality more by treating the acoustics of the listening room than you will by buying more expensive kit.

I honestly just want some normal setup on which you can just listen to some music in the background if a girl comes over. I don't want to buy a TV, I have always preferred to just chill and listen to music whenever I am at a friend's house for example.
You think that 2K is a good budget for a quality setup which will last me for a long time?

it doesn't sound like you really even need some fancy hi-fi system. a basic $50-$100 set of wired speakers would probably suffice.

You can spend far more than that and get vastly much better sound. But the question is, if you're going to spend a certain number of dollars, what should you spend it on to get the *maximum* improvement in sound quality that this amount of money can buy you?

The thing that most people don't think about is that the acoustics of the room you are listening in have a massive impact on the quality of the sound that you hear. If you fix all of the acoustic problems that your room probably has, at that point spending more money on hardware *will* actually result in a major improvement to the sound; but until the acoustic issues are fixed, the distortion introduced by the room drowns out any benefit you get from better hardware.

So, if you're going to spend $4K, you will probably get better results spending $2K on hardware and $2K on acoustic treatments than you will if you spend it all on hardware.

You should never spend too much on audio because we figured it out in t he 60s, and you can have a competent setup for very little money if you like old stuff. Spending more than $1k on a stereo is crazy when there's so much old stuff practically being given away on estate sales and craigslist. It's always kids selling gramp's old stuff because they don't understand that the "shitty old tape deck" they listed for $30 is actually worth $800. Gramp's ghost will appreciate you actually using his stuff, unlike his ungrateful kids.

Also, actually, if you're trying to impress a girl, women don't generally give a fuck about sound quality. So spending more on the system won't get you laid.

Thanks for the reply. I guess this answers my question then, I'll be getting a cheaper setup. I am not some audiophile, best I can do for room acoustics is the right speaker placement. I just need some competent setup that will last me a long time.

I'll look into used speakers. However, the amp and CD player I would rather buy new because of modern streaming services, bluetooth and because most modern amps seem to be much more powerful than old ones.
Imagine a girl's disappointment if she can't even connect her spotify to my setup.

Get some vintage gear and hook up a bluetooth receiver to an input. Easy peasy.

It will make no difference whatsoever. If you are a bore then your music player will be insufficient, and if you are interesting then it will be unnecessary.

What? To date all you need is two consenting people who want to be in a romantic relationship.

OP is autistic.

7K minimum. You also need a guy to come out and acoustically treat the space. No self-respecting woman would fuck some loser without the proper bass trapping in his audio listening space.

Anon, it's a component audio system. You can add the spotify box to it, even if it's old. All you need is those RCA cables.

Speakers are just speakers. You can couple 60-year-old speakers to a bluetooth system with the standard wiring.
