Meet in a public place even if having to suggest this hurts the other person's feelings. Don't send money, don't go to a stranger's apartment if she's promising something too good to be true, etc.

And as far as the girl knows, they're only respectful and polite as far as they've shown so far. We've all seen the cases where a guy was perfectly nice until he heard "no" and then got weird or hostile quickly. Girls have to think about stuff like this.
