Is it worth it to rent a house instead of an apartment? Assuming you live alone and it would cost another $1k/month

What's your income? Are you saving for anything?

No. Don't spend more money than you have to unless you absolutely need the space and separation, like if you do plan to own a home, but have a job in Seattle, for example. You might want to rent a house, but other than that, no, don't rent. Either buy a house, or rent an apartment for less.

For a single man, I'd assume 2 bedrooms is all he'd need, one for a bed and one for an office/recreational. Just depends if you want to be locked down.

Income is 112k before taxes in USA. I save half my paychecks. I usually invest to VTI/BTC but the markets look pretty heated so now so just been stacking cash. Picrel is the exact numbers

I guess that makes sense. I just hit 30, so thought it could be something to consider. I guess the money would be better invested across another decade. 12k/year. $120k/decade, which could very well be multiples that in some investments.

Been working the same job from home for 5 years now. I would only rent a one year lease. Currently have a 2bedroom apartment.
The main benefit to a home would just be throwing social gatherings, having something more impressive for dates coming over and maybe getting a dog that's potty trained to just go through the doggy door instead of me taking it outside every time in the designated apartment area.

If it's just for a year and you'd still be budgeting comfortably, it could be fun. Is there a reason you'd prefer to rent rather than own? Owning gives you the benefit of being able to sell it when you're done, but ofc it does come with the headache of the whole process of buying/selling, versus a quick rental agreement.
Something to consider in your budget is that it sounds like your expenses would go up beyond just the increase in rent, since you'll want to live a more expensive lifestyle ie parties and a dog.

Wouldn't want to buy since I doubt I'd want to live where I live more than 5 more years and then dealing with extra headaches of buying/selling, fixing the place up and dealing with things breaking. Honestly leaning on just renting. Might think about buying if I hit a portfolio milestone of $1M or so.

yeah, that's true. It's probably another $1500-2000 a month. I could afford it, but meh might be better off using a fraction of that for renting airbnbs once a month and prob just holding off on the dog.
