So I went for a job interview today for a shit minimum wage job.

One of the managers that was interviewed asked me this question that threw me for a loop.

They asked if I have plans on being promoted later on down the line or seeking to be a manager with the company one day.

I told them not really and that I'll be just fine with the position I'm applying for.

So now I'm wondering, what the hell are they trying to get at with that question?

Is this basically a reincarnation of where do I see myself in five years?

Jesus, man. It's a no-brainer. They're asking you for the purpose of knowing your commitment to the job. Most employers only really give a shit if you can show up on time and do work. The whole purpose of a degree is to show that you can show up somewhere for 4 years and produce decent work... Work good enough to graduate anyways. If you really did answer "nah" to seeking something more one day, then how can they be confident that you'll also show up every day and not slack off? They'll tell you that they can't. MFs complain about the job market being ass but answer their interview questions like this... Sheesh.

Yes. They want someone who will do the job well and enthusiastically in order to make a good impression, not someone who puts the minimum amount of effort in to avoid being fired. They may also be a company that genuinely prefers to promote people internally and are looking for potential future promotion candidates. You do need to be a little careful with that question: if you sound completely focused on your next job rather than your current one, then they'll think that you'll probably be slacking off on the one you've got. But they would prefer someone with ambition, drive and energy, not some mentally ill apathetic loser.

it's a minimum wage job. the justification employers have for paying minimum wage is that the job is so easy and low-skill that anyone can do it, but if that were really the case then they wouldn't need to interview candidates because everyone who applied would already be qualified enough.

>So now I'm wondering, what the hell are they trying to get at with that question?
Business owner here. Its a pretty standard question. There are typically two kinds of employees - ones that just need a job and have no interest in the kind of work you do and ones that have motivation to do their jobs well and have at least some passing interest in the field. I have room in my company for both kinds of people but its helpful to know which is which. Sometimes jobs just require a body which means I'll put any idiot on it. Other jobs require a bit of smarts and for these tasks I'll often choose people who have some desire on moving up. I'd rather spend my time and energy training and grooming those people than some 21 year old kid who has no plans on still working there after 6 months and only shows up for the paycheck. Its not a trick question. I also like to point blank ask people if they're interested in further training and management track before I waste any time giving them special attention.

Well, mister business owner, let me rephrase. I have zero interest to have a future career at Walmart, whether it be a stocker or moving up to be a department or store manager.

If I was that entry level intern and my life goal was to have a career in stock brokering, then yea, I would be happy as a pig to be filling paperwork and getting people coffee and other shit grunt work. Why? Because, I love the wonderful world of stock brokering and future awesome places I'm going to go in the stock brokering world.

But me? I do not give a shit about retail and do not see myself in it at all, not even as a fancy store manager or some goon in their corporate office.

In this case, you just smile and say something like:

"I’m results-driven and want to hit the ground running so I can do right by our customers and my team. Over the next couple of years, I’d like to work closely with management, learn as much as I can, and use that experience to have a bigger impact in the org."

If it's obvious bullshit answers to obvious bullshit questions, what's even the point? To gauge whether you are socially autistic and bullshitting skills? (which has nothing to do with job performance in most jobs). >If it was really a low-skill job, interviews wouldn't be needed!
At the risk of sounding like the nerd faced emoji with the "actually--" bullshit, I'd hazard to say that that's exactly the reason why his employer is asking for an interview. There's 1 position available at the company, and since it's so low-skill that anyone can do it, 100 people apply. They aren't hiring 100 more people, so they need to figure out how to eliminate 99 candidates, and use interviews to figure out who's "top of the flops" per-se. The more people that apply, the better screening methods you'll need to filter out the good ones from the trash ones, making the process both longer and harder for everyone.

>His morality justifies his stupidity!
Sometimes there's value in being honest with your employers, and other times there isn't. This is one of those times. In my min wagie job apparently these types were the ones who called one of the store managers (reference check) about questions relating to a potential new hire (literally a volunteer who finally went for a paid position) who was volunteering at his store.

Why TF isn't it the store manager for the store who this volunteer applied for the one calling up the other store manager how that person was. Or why wasn't it the regional manager (the direct manager to the regular store managers) enquiring? From my understanding there is usually the regional manager and 2 store managers at the actual interview.
