Frens, how do I go about keeping the doomerism at bay while trying to find work? I have decent qualifications, went to a uni with a great reputation/hiring metrics in the area, and am ambitious/willing to work. The market’s just very meh right now, and my network could be better, so no bites. I could just settle for being underemployed and take whatever, but that would probably hurt my chances of getting anything else later. Job handcuffs are real.

But online, you’d think Fist of the North Star is going to become a documentary next week. It’s hard to keep fighting through to another day when everybody online is screaming at you to just give up and do nothing with your life. Admittedly, I feel tired and discouraged.

your outlook on your employment situation is correct, your lifetime earnings will be forever and permanently diminished by starting out right now.

you keep the doomerism at bay with solidarity and unionization to claw back every cent you can. the days of anyone on their own striking gold working for someone else are over, only collective bargaining will extract anything significant from now on

For sure; as many people as there are that are screaming about the trades being the best way right now, that’s not smart either, unless you’ve got the capital to start your own business or get right in with a union that will have your back. Otherwise, you’re looking at the same stagnation and exploitation as everything else.

Trying my best to push forward and find a niche workwise that will work for me and not require me to sell my entire soul and morality.

fist of the north star? what does that have to do with you.

this varies depending on field but for my type of work human services a graduate degree is really useful or even required for something most people want to eventually do there, maybe including me but im not sure. a lot of people take something that can pay the bills while doing what they can to arrange for soemthing more ideal. im taking some shit at cheap ass pay because its an interesting experience potentially and good networking but i may not have the same field as you

I got a psych degree myself, so somewhat adjacent to human services/social work/HR I suppose. Went with something reasonably flexible since I wasn’t sure at the time if I’d go all-in on office work or pivot to getting qualifications to work in mental health or something similar.

As for what it has to do with me, there always seems to be a very vocal contingent insisting that the world’s soon going to look like Mad Max or a scene out of an apocalyptic anime, and either the old An Hero Method or living homeless off the grid are the only options left.

I wish that was hyperbole, but a few posts on other sites like Reddit are pure depressing brainrot. It’s awful.

Are you familiar with the dead internet theory? It's close but not entirely accurate. Instead of bots, replace them with the unemployed. It's the unemployed who make up most of the posts on the internet.

Unions and labor rights in the US are fucking dead. The NLRB has been gutted and its leadership replaced by Trump loyalists.

I hitched myself to a union movement in 2020 and we STILL don't have a contract. The company keeps breaking the law, but guess what? The way labor law is written in this country, there's no penalty for corporations trampling on our rights. A small fee, that's it. It's literally cheaper for employers to break the law than to recognize a union.

If it’s a bunch of NEETs doomposting, it would make sense.

I just wish the grist mill of it all would halt. I know things aren’t super great right now, but still, I’d get no joy out of everything turning into Hell, and don’t want to become one of those people who would.

Maybe it’s delusional cope on my part, but still, even if it’s a small future in real life, I want one.

My sympathies, fren. It’s hard to start movements within soulless corpos. Your efforts are seen and appreciated by me though, even if you haven’t gotten that contract yet. It takes real guts, and I mean that. Small comfort, maybe, in this environment, but I try to give a good word to people when and where I can. Unlike so many other things, it doesn’t cost me anything but a moment of time.

You and all the others doing the hard work out there deserve better.

Indeed; a fair opinion. His patheticness perfectly encapsulates how I feel about myself at my worst moments, though. Except I’ve never simped for a red panda office lady.

Well, do you want to work? Would you enjoy your job? "Work" simply isn't for everyone anon. The market right now sucks ass but if you want to spend time doing what you want to do, be it working or not, do it anon. Just do something where you'll look back on and hope you made the right choice, don't waste years you'll never get back is my advice, spend it how you want to spend it.

Thank you; I do appreciate it. I have things I enjoy doing outside of searching for a career to fund my life, but when you have relatives around you that don’t understand how difficult it is to find worthwhile jobs in this moment, doing anything but focusing all my energy on Making A Career Happen can leave me feeling like a lazy bum.

I appreciate the reminder that there’s a lot more to life and making something of it than just the grind. It’s easy to lose sight of that nowadays.

Honestly anon, screw what your relatives think. It's your ONLY life and you should spend it however it makes you feel free and fulfilled. If that means being an uncontributing bum, it means being an uncontributing bum and that's okay. If that means being a hardworking man, that means being a hardworking man.

Either or is fine, just don't be like haida lol.

An inspiring outlook; thank you! I guess I should take time to invest in my own fulfillment at this moment. Nothing to lose but the certainty of regret later if I don’t.

I feel like some people in my family underestimate how much luck was needed in their cases, considering one of the worst offenders critique-wise has a job he by rights shouldn’t have (and probably wouldn’t get the like of again, if he lost it in this market). I don’t begrudge his success at all, but some understanding would be nice.

At the very least, I won’t be Haida in the end, lol.
