Study all the major religions and take from it what makes the most sense to you and discard whatever you don't agree with. Acknowledge there is a higher power but not in the sense of what's being sold to you as "God". Or fuck all that and go the esoteric/occult route, the choice is yours.

If the god in question isn't real, then how can the religion offer meaning?

Possibly your best option would be the Church of Satan. This is a pseudo-religion created by Anton LaVey. It explicitly teaches that there aren't any gods and that Satan isn't real; but it adopts the trappings of a religion (religious ceremonies, etc.) to achieve specific, beneficial, psychological goals in its members.

You are very correct. It’s a pity that many won’t listen to this wisdom though. Most of the world are addicted to pleasure, and they run from suffering. Sooner or later suffering catches up to them, and they will find they suffer for nothing. No meaning. Those who believe suffer for something, which means they live for everything. Pray for those whose souls are dead. They don’t even know their soul(s) have perished.
