Give me a reason to be a good person.

If it takes effort and I get nothing in return, and I'm never going to bond with people, why should I strive to be a good person?

By definition, good people do it because it's right, expecting nothing in return.

You are not a good person and will never become one if it's in your heart to ask that question. I don't know whether it's nature or nurture but you obviously lack both the morality and the drive.

The conditions you place on kindness invalidate it.
Societies have been polite and respectful(according to their own custioms) for thousands of years and people have managed to keep it going because the behavior encourages bonding without burden.

You're exactly the kind of person who needs to work on loving and having compassion/understanding for yourself. You are burnt out on people-pleasing or something similar. Meanwhile people-pleasers and their ilk are just annoying and their strivings are counterproductive. Or you are enabling and feeding the psychopaths, narcissists, and emotional vampires in your life.
You need to acknowledge when other people are mistreating you, or at least misunderstanding you, or abusing you because of stressors that have nothing to do with you.
So, I mean, obviously you need to reframe what your problem is. If your boss/wife/family treat you like crap and use you and then guilt you, make you feel like a not-good person for not eating their shit with a smile on your face, then you need to change your circumstances. Change the power dynamic, even if only how you see it in your mind.

Really good podcast but this episode was about prisoners dilemma. There's a coding competition where people submit strategies to play prisoners dilemma against one another and the best strategy wins. Its also studied to fucking death bevause nature behaves the same way a lot of the time because, tldr:

A variation of "Tit for tat" is the best strategy. Hands down unbeatable. Translated into real social terms, you open with people by being nice. If theyre nice, you stay nice. If they hit you, you hit back, and you keep hitting back, but on occasion you extend an olive branch to see if they convert.

By following this strategy, others using the same strategy all benefit. Even the best piece of shit only does well in the short run. And even though it can take an advantage of someone being nice, the person being nice benefits too much by banding together with others being nice for it to even matter.

And humans are pretty wired for cooperation, and the fact we do to a degree naturally gravitate to "cooperation but dont fuck with me" is a huge reason we have civilisation at all.

Even if I don't get anything in return, being nice to others makes me feel happy with them. For example, gifting people with sweets makes them grateful and happy, and I get to share that with them. That kind of connection with others feels good.

What do you mean by good person? The super short answer is bad people are ejected from society and thus don't have access to the cooperate power that it is, then it takes more effort and you get less in return while you're trying to be some kind of lone wolf sigma male who thinks he can smugly hover above the game like an edgy 20 year old.

There's more choices than work or steal. And work doesn't guarantee good outcomes any more than volunteering does.

Things should be done for their own sake. Any work you do, do it for your own satisfaction first and for reward as a bonus.

For instance I am a huge contributor for OSM, because that's just a really good thing to do on walks and I get competitive with other contributors. The fact the map around my area is getting better than Google's is just a side effect.
