Long story short, it's less that penetration is mid and more that penetration isn't as inherently amazing because the sensitivity of the vagina directly correlates with how horny she is. A lot of young, eager guys skimp on foreplay and also kind of fetishize the whole "we're too horny to take our time and just tear each other's clothes off" and even if the vag is technically wet enough to enter without pain, this often does come down to fucking the equivalent of a semi.
