Can I Be Sued for Slander?
My friend just found out that I've been giving him shit references.
My friend has been extremely depressed for a year and a half because he can't find a job in his field and his life fell apart. The reason is because I, being one of his references, has been trolling him. I'm his third reference for a startup company we made a while ago, and instead of giving him a positive reference, I've been telling the hiring manager/HR caller that he was shit and a scammer and to never hire him.
Well turns out one of the hiring managers spilled the beans on me and told him what I said as a reference. He's now PISSED off at me and fully cut me off. He is threatening to sue for slander because I told the hiring manager bunch of false shit about him that he argues is slander, and he can sue me for lying about him to the other employers too.
His wife divorced him because he had to move out of his apartment and move back in with his parents and he lost his daughter and shit. He's saying that all this emotional damage is on me sabataging his job efforts and he's taking me to court, what chance do i have of not losing money?
